As a movie critic with a soft spot for cult-classics and a deep appreciation for the art of acting, I must say that the upcoming release of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu has me downright giddy. With a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s shaping up to be the horror movie of the year, and the performances by Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Bill Skarsgård have been nothing short of captivating.
In just about two weeks’ time, we’ll be able to watch Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu on the cinema screen, and let me tell you, our anticipation is reaching fever pitch! So far, this vampire film has been receiving rave reviews from all corners, and it boasts a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes as “Certified Fresh”. Director Fede Álvarez even called it the “horror movie of the year”, while many are praising Lily-Rose Depp’s outstanding performance. Interestingly enough, she drew inspiration for her character from a classic 1981 thriller.
In an interview with IndieWire before the release of Nosferatu on December 25, Depp revealed that when it came to portraying Ellen, he drew inspiration from another actress who had played the same character in Werner Herzog’s 1979 film: Isabelle Adjani. While Adjani’s performance as a vampire in Herzog’s movie was impressive, Depp was particularly captivated by her unhinged portrayal of Anna in Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 horror masterpiece, Possession.
I’ve given much consideration to the topic of Possession, especially since Isabelle Adjani delivered such a powerful and memorable portrayal in it. Not only was she a predecessor, but I felt privileged to embody the French version of Ellen. She is an actress who serves as a significant source of inspiration for me.
If you’ve watched “Possession,” you’re aware of the exceptional acting by Isabelle Adjani. Her performance, which earned accolades, was unparalleled as she portrayed a woman succumbing to madness amidst a divorce, where an otherworldly presence took control, expressed through her increasingly erratic actions. It’s a spectacle worth witnessing and challenging to surpass in the remake that has been announced recently.
Everything is “Real” in ‘Nosferatu’
In the film “Nosferatu”, Johnny Depp acts alongside Nicholas Hoult and Bill Skarsgård. Interestingly, Bill Skarsgård plays Count Orlok in this production. Unlike modern movies that rely heavily on computer-generated imagery (CGI), Eggers’ movie leans more towards practical effects, making extensive use of prosthetics for Bill Skarsgård’s transformation into the title character, the vampire.
Furthermore, the story didn’t end there, as the Swedish actor underwent vocal training from Icelandic opera singer Ásgerður Júníusdóttir to deepen his voice for the role. According to Depp, this experience combined with her own performance made acting in Nosferatu seem incredibly authentic.
In the film, Bill’s genuine appearance, voice, and movements were all kept intact. This was consistent throughout. Similarly, my actual movements were always real. I tried to embrace this authenticity as a means of portraying the character, using physical moments to express the internal struggles she experiences. In a way, I used these physical expressions as a bridge into her emotions, and vice versa.
Discovering that Depp drew inspiration from Adjani piques our curiosity about the film Nosferatu even further. You’ll be able to witness how everything unfolds for Skarsgård, Hoult, and her when it premieres nationwide on December 25, distributed by Focus Features.
