As a long-time fan of dystopian dramas who’s seen more than a few characters meet their untimely demise in flooded silos, I must say that this week’s episode of Silo left me on the edge of my seat – and not just because of the rising water levels. The revelation that Steve Zahn’s character, Solo, is actually Cole Myers, a.k.a. the I.T. shadow of Silo 17, has sent chills down my spine.
Attention: This discussion may contain plot points from episode 205 of Silo, titled “Descent”. If you haven’t seen the recent episode yet, beware of potential spoilers.
Readers, we’ve now arrived at the midpoint of Silo‘s second season. Five more episodes remain, taking us from the 2024 TV lineup right into the 2025 calendar, and that’s exciting! However, recent events have left me feeling quite uneasy regarding Steve Zahn’s enigmatic character Solo. What makes it even more concerning is the potential risk this instability could pose to Juliette Nichols, portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson.
Solo’s Breakdown, And What Triggered It
It’s been revealed that the enigmatic man in Silo 17, whom Juliette is now apprehensive about, isn’t actually known as Solo. Instead, his real name is Cole Myers, as unveiled in this week’s episode of Silo. Additionally, it seems that Cole holds a significant role within the IT infrastructure of this location, a detail discovered by the former sheriff of Silo 18 during some astute detective work.
When faced with the reality, “Solo” initially spins a charming tale that the nickname was given accidentally. Yet, under continued questioning, he changes his tune.
As a gamer, when Juliette presented the photo of the real Solo alongside Trina Samuels as proof of someone’s hidden identity, it set off alarm bells for me. It was like finding a secret level in a game I thought I already knew all about. The revelation pushed my character, Cole or Solo, into a whirlwind of emotions, causing him to explode with the confession that he is both the IT shadow and Solo himself.
Where Silo Season 2 Currently Leaves Juliette, And Why I’m Worried
Such a danger is troubling enough in isolation, but it becomes even more concerning given the impending submergence of Silo 17. However, the finale of “Descent” presents our protagonist with a dual outcome: a boon and an obstacle.
The positive development is that Rebecca Ferguson’s unofficial sleuth successfully located the immaculate suit helmet she had been searching for. Regrettably, she sustained a severe arm injury, and she has suddenly lost consciousness due to an undetermined reason.
Imagine this scene: Silo 17 is gradually filling up with water, making it necessary for you to assemble a protective suit to return to Silo 18. Unfortunately, you’ve fainted, leaving a glowing flashlight behind, after attempting to discreetly escape from the lunatic who was shouting in your face.
Essentially, Silo has left Juliette in that condition, and it’s rare to find a danger more menacing than the oppressive, authoritative system that usually overshadows her. Indeed, my concerns are heightened…
Clearly, things are far from improved in Silo 18 at present. The stunning ending of episode four continues to resonate with escapists Knox (Shane McRae) and Shirley (Remmie Milner). On the other hand, Sims (Common) has been appointed a judge by Bernard (Tim Robbins), taking over from the late Judge Meadows. To add complexity to this tumultuous situation, Sheriff Billings (Chinaza Uche) is probing questions that are correct in nature but misguided, while Lukas Kyle (Avi Nash) uncovers secret passages exiting Silo 18.
This is the point where I thank creator/showrunner Graham Yost for nixing Silo’s potential alternating storyline strategy, as I don’t think I’d be able to sit through an entire episode without knowing how Juliette is going to get out of this mess involving Solo. Then again, there might not be a mess to be gotten out of.
Join us next Friday as Episode 206 – “Baracades” premieres for Apple TV+ subscribers! Until our next encounter, may you handle the anticipation gracefully… and resist the urge to hum “Les Miserables” melodies in solitude after discovering the title of the upcoming episode.
