As a seasoned cinephile with decades spent immersed in the intricate tapestry of the silver screen, I must say that Aaron Taylor-Johnson‘s journey within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an intriguing one. His transformation from Pietro Maximoff to Kraven the Hunter showcases the versatility and range of this talented actor.
Fans of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are accustomed to seeing actors play multiple roles within the same universe. For instance, Robert Downey Jr., who initially appeared as Tony Stark/Iron Man, is now set to embody a completely contrasting character, Doctor Doom, in upcoming Avengers films. In a similar fashion, Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who was briefly Pietro Maximoff in Avengers: Age of Ultron) will rejoin the MCU with his new role as Kraven the Hunter in an upcoming movie. This is not a simple reprisal for him but rather a fresh character he’s taking on.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Taylor-Johnson playfully pointed out the growing trend among actors who have portrayed multiple characters within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), forming an exclusive club. However, unlike his fellow club members, Taylor-Johnson doesn’t consider his upcoming role in ‘Kraven the Hunter’ as a reboot or crossover. Instead, he sees these two characters as being completely distinct. “There’s absolutely no connection between them,” Taylor-Johnson stated. He further explained that playing Kraven offers him a fresh opportunity to delve into a new character and uncover various layers. Additionally, he believes fans won’t be perplexed by his transition to a different role, as it has been a decade since Pietro Maximoff made his debut and met an instant end.
As a cinephile, I’ve poured countless hours into this project, and it’s something I wear my heart on my sleeve about. I truly believe it has the staying power to make an impact in the world of cinema.
It’s clear why Taylor-Johnson feels a stark contrast in his portrayal of Kraven the Hunter compared to his character in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Initially, both Pietro and Wanda Maximoff were relatively inexperienced young adults in the MCU, far less seasoned than the Avengers. While Wanda evolved into a powerful character as the Scarlet Witch, Pietro never had the chance to develop. However, Taylor-Johnson’s new role allows him to showcase a more mature and complex side, with his character grappling with deep, dark issues and intense emotions. In essence, he stated that this character is a fully-grown man, a skilled hunter wrestling with internal demons and uncontrollable rage, presenting a narrative that feels completely distinct from his previous role.
Is Kraven the Hunter a New Franchise in the Making?
Titled “Kraven the Hunter,” this R-rated movie produced by Sony Pictures delves into the origins of one of the infamous foes faced by Spider-Man among the Marvel villains, with Taylor-Johnson portraying Sergei Kravinoff. Joining him in the cast are Russell Crowe, Ariana DeBose, Alessandro Nivola, and Christopher Abbott. Despite the introduction of a fresh character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which often signals potential sequels or even entire franchises, “Kraven the Hunter” could still stand as a single venture, regardless of its critical reception, following the demise of Sony’s Spider-Man universe.
Unfortunately, the initial reception for Kraven the Hunter hasn’t been particularly positive, despite Andrew Garfield’s visible excitement about the role. Remarkably, its early Rotten Tomatoes score mirrors those of infamous flops such as Madame Web and Morbius. Given these feedbacks, it might be a wise decision that Sony is stepping away from the Spider-Man universe for now.
