As a long-time fan of Daniel Craig and his illustrious career as James Bond, I’ve always admired his dedication to his craft. But let me tell you, after reading about his coffee grounds debacle during the filming of “Queer,” I have a whole new level of respect for him!
In discussing his upcoming movie “Queer” by A24, Daniel Craig has fielded numerous questions regarding the intimate scenes he performs with Drew Starkey. The film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, explores a romantic relationship between two men and features several sex and nudity scenes, one of which was filmed outdoors in what appeared to be dirt. Interestingly, that ‘dirt’ was actually coffee grounds, leading to an unexpected incident during the shoot, which Craig has revealed in an amusing anecdote.
During a conversation about the airing of Queer, Craig vividly recounted an exhilarating, dance-filled, nude scene he did with the star from Outer Banks. To set the stage, he explained they were shooting on a backlot. Initially, they planned to execute the sequence on gravel. But it soon became apparent that wasn’t the wisest choice: it didn’t work out as planned.
In one part of the film, there’s a dance scene that I won’t spoil, but trust me, it’s there! We filmed this outside on the backlot and the ground was simply gravel, making our two-night rolls rather uncomfortable. I remember thinking, “We’re bound to get scraped up!” In this scene, we were bare as a breeze.
Just recently, I caught wind of the upcoming release of “Queer” in 2024’s movie lineup, and I can confirm that Daniel Craig is referring to a specific scene. However, I aim to preserve the surprise for viewers. Let me give you a hint: the actors involved, namely Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, are both in the buff in this scene, they engage in an intricate dance choreography without any clothing on, and this dance takes place amidst the lush greenery of a jungle. Given that filming such a scene on gravel could be excruciating, it’s understandable that they opted for a different location instead.
That alternative though, had consequences, because the coffee grounds that replaced the gravel ended up making him feel like he drank coffee, as the Knives Out star explained:
In simpler terms, someone had offered a suggestion that the original plan wouldn’t succeed and would result in injuries, as it wasn’t suitable for the scene. Upon returning the next evening, they found approximately 50 pounds of coffee grounds scattered on the ground, creating an appearance similar to dirt. While the texture was soft and appealing, the coffee grounds could be absorbed through the skin, leading to discomfort by 6 o’clock in the morning during a night shoot, causing the individual to exclaim, “Goodnight!” with apprehension.
Right after Craig made that statement, my curiosity piqued just like Jesse Eisenberg’s, as we both wondered if what he said was indeed genuine. I found myself asking the very same question.
As per the National Library of Medicine, it’s known that caffeine can penetrate the skin. A research study on “the passage of caffeine through human skin when applied topically” found traces of caffeine in participants’ blood just five minutes following application.
I guess Craig must be right about being restless due to coffee grounds making their way into his system, following hours of tumbling around in them. On the positive note, since this was a night shoot, at least they had an impromptu energy boost, even if it was unconventional and taken unexpectedly.
Should you be interested in experiencing a ‘Queer’ atmosphere as described by Daniel Craig, I recommend catching the current theater release of the Luca Guadagnino film.
