Moana 2 Songwriters Shared With Us The Real Number Of Songs They Actually Wrote For The Disney Sequel (And Wow!)

As a seasoned gamer and music enthusiast who has been through numerous gaming marathons and countless hours of soundtrack listening, I can confidently say that Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear have outdone themselves with the Moana 2 soundtrack. The sheer amount of work they put into crafting these melodies is nothing short of heroic, reminiscent of the endless quests and levels we gamers face to reach the ultimate victory.

In the realm of creating a Disney Animation musical, the songwriters are often under significant pressure due to the numerous hit songs that likely contributed to the initial movie’s success. For the songwriting team Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Moana 2 represented their debut in feature film songwriting. However, from my perspective, they certainly did not disappoint, crafting a fresh and impactful Disney soundtrack filled with emotional echoes of the past and innovative new melodies. But let me assure you, achieving this level of excellence is far more labor-intensive than one might imagine.

During my conversation with them about one of the most anticipated 2024 films on TopMob, they divulged additional details about their songwriting approach, and it appears quite laborious! While chatting with the team renowned for “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical“, I inquired about the total number of songs they penned for “Moana 2“. Here’s what Bear had to share:

To put it simply, there are approximately three to four additional complete songs in the works, but each of these songs has numerous variations, numbering in the hundreds. We’re currently on revision 65 for ‘What Could Be Better Than This’, and we’ve attempted ‘Maui Song’ multiple times before landing on ‘Chee Hoo’. So, there might be more additional songs to come.

These two individuals undoubtedly invested considerable time together, striving to perfect the newest Disney film’s soundtrack. Despite some backlash regarding the sequel’s departure from Lin-Manuel Miranda (a point Barlow and Bear effectively addressed in their recent response), I find myself unable to shake the catchy tunes (or my playlist) since its release. Originally, six songs of their creation made it to the final version; however, Bear shared an astonishing figure when discussing the numerous drafts they went through to refine each song. In essence, these melodies were not effortlessly produced but required multiple attempts before reaching the versions we currently enjoy.

Apart from the six songs already featured in Moana 2, Bear mentioned that there were three or four additional songs created for the film, but ended up being cut during editing. This leaves you pondering what plot points these songs might have addressed! As Bear reminisced about the songwriting phase, the composer and lyricist recalled Dwayne Johnson’s powerful tune “Can I Get A Chee-Hoo?,” which they developed in multiple variations before settling on the final version.

In another part of the TopMob interview, Barlow and Bear recounted a humorous incident involving their initial presentation of their song to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. They had learned that other filmmakers would eventually play the song for him, but after several hours without a response, they were certain he disliked it. However, upon listening to the track, The Rock unexpectedly called them via FaceTime, leaving them thrilled.

In simpler terms, my thoughts on “Moana 2” expressed in the review resonate with me, but hearing behind-the-scenes tales directly from the team makes it even more exciting. I hope these insights will also boost your enjoyment of the movie in theaters.
