On December 16, 2024, at the age of 73, renowned tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain passed away, leaving a profound impact on the world. His passing sparked shock and sorrow, touching the hearts of his fans and admirers worldwide. Numerous Bollywood stars and celebrities expressed their grief, with Adnan Sami sharing that they were scheduled to perform together just three days prior to his demise but had to postpone due to health concerns. Amitabh Bachchan also grieved the loss, stating that he is struggling to come to terms with it.
Adnani Sami posted a heartfelt message on X (previously known as Twitter), which included multiple photographs of Zakir Hussain. In this message, Sami conveyed his deep sorrow and shock following Hussain’s passing, referring to him as more than just an acquaintance—instead, he called him an older brother.

Adnan added that they had recently made arrangements to collaborate more frequently, and their debut performance was set for December 12, 2024, in Mumbai. But, just a few weeks before the show, it was pushed back due to Zakir’s health concerns, with hopes of rescheduling it for March 2025.

A highly skilled 73-year-old tabla master faced challenges with high blood pressure, causing him to be admitted to a well-known hospital specializing in critical health cases. Regardless of the tireless work by medical personnel and fervent wishes from his numerous admirers, the esteemed artist sadly succumbed to these health complications.
For the past fortnight, Hussain has been under medical treatment in San Francisco, as he struggles with health issues linked to an unknown lung disease called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Zakir Hussain, who passed away, is survived by his spouse Antonia Minnecola, their daughters Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi, as well as their respective families. Additionally, he leaves behind his brothers Taufiq and Fazal Qureshi, and his sister Khurshid Aulia. Born in Mumbai’s Mahim on March 9, 1951, Zakir Hussain was the child of renowned tabla master Ustad Allarakha.
