As a gamer with an unhealthy obsession with TV shows and a particular fondness for “Lucifer“, I must say that the relationship between Lucifer Morningstar and Detective Chloe Decker is one of the most intriguing, complex, and heart-wrenchingly beautiful love stories I’ve ever encountered. It’s like a rollercoaster ride through the depths of Hell and back, with all its twists, turns, and unexpected drops.
The TV series “Lucifer” follows Lucifer Morningstar, portrayed by Tom Ellis, who abandons his duties in Hell to establish a nightclub in LA. Upon assisting the LAPD with a homicide investigation, he forms a lasting partnership with Detective Chloe Decker as a civilian advisor. This sets the stage for their romantic tale… Or so it begins.
In the unusual blend of cop drama and supernatural series they’re airing, it takes Chloe a significant amount of time to realize that Lucifer is actually the Devil. Initially, she sees him as an intriguing individual with an unconventional approach to life, dismissing his devilish antics as mere coping mechanisms. She’s initially skeptical of his claims, but finds his help in the field valuable, so she tolerates his assertions. Over time, she develops feelings for him.
Although she remains immune to his charms compared to other women who are easily captivated by him, she eventually develops feelings for him as they grow closer. However, their journey towards true love is not easy, particularly for Lucifer and Chloe.
Lucifer and Detective Chloe Decker’s relationship timeline is very bumpy
Put simply, the relationship between Lucifer and Chloe is far from smooth sailing; instead, it’s a rollercoaster ride filled with obstacles throughout the series. At first, their distance is due to Chloe’s initial disdain for Lucifer, but things become more intricate when they both develop feelings for each other. The complications escalate as Lucifer’s invincibility disappears around her, making it challenging for him to prove his true identity as the devil. In particularly dire situations, such as multiple shootings, Lucifer even faces death and has to resort to praying to his father for resurrection, a fact unknown to Chloe.
Later, as Lucifer prepares to unveil his genuine identity to Chloe, an unexpected turn of events occurs – he’s abducted and left stranded in the desert. Upon returning, he attempts to display his authentic “Devil face” to Chloe, but to his surprise, he’s unable to. Before Chloe discovers Lucifer’s real persona, she becomes engaged to a police lieutenant named Marcus Pierce (Tom Welling), who happens to be none other than Cain – the infamous brother of Abel from ancient folklore. This revelation unfolds before Chloe learns about Lucifer’s true essence.
Chloe finds out Lucifer is the devil much later than you’d expect
In the 24th episode of Season 3, titled “A Devil of My Word,” it’s revealed that Lucifer is indeed the Devil. This shocking revelation comes at the end of the episode, triggered by Lucifer’s selfless act to protect Chloe. Throughout the episode, Dan (Kevin Alejandro), Chloe’s ex-husband and fellow detective, uncovers that Pierce (played by Tricia Helfer) was the one who killed Charlotte, a woman whom Dan had been seeing and who was well-liked by Lucifer and others. As Chloe and Lucifer confront Pierce, they unexpectedly find themselves in the midst of an ambush.
Initially, Chloe steps in front of Lucifer and Pierce, reassuring Pierce he won’t harm her because of his love for her. However, one of Pierce’s accomplices fires a shot, causing Chloe to fall into Lucifer’s embrace. This action triggers a gunfight, during which Lucifer uses his angel wings to shield them. Seizing the opportunity, Lucifer carries Chloe away and sets her down on a roof. Upon waking, Chloe reveals she was wearing a bulletproof vest, demonstrating its effectiveness in saving her life.
After confirming Chloe’s safety, Lucifer descends towards Pierce and his henchmen, utilizing his wings to subdue them. Upon encountering Pierce, he finds that Pierce possesses one of Maze’s daggers – weapons capable of killing Lucifer since they were brought up from Hell by him. Pierce attempts to use the dagger against Lucifer, but it is Lucifer who ends up slaying Pierce with it instead. This act reveals his Devil form, and when Chloe hurries downstairs to find him, she witnesses this transformation. The sight of his true nature confirms for her that everything Lucifer had told her was indeed authentic. However, rather than feeling elated by the truth, Chloe initially reacts with fear – a sentiment that lasts for some time.
How Lucifer’s big reveal to Chloe changed everything
Initially, when Lucifer unveiled his true identity to Chloe, it didn’t improve their bond. In the premiere of Season 4, which was Netflix’s first installment in the show’s final three seasons following Fox’s cancellation of “Lucifer”, it’s disclosed that Chloe is working with a Vatican priest on a scheme to banish Lucifer to Hell. Despite later understanding this wasn’t right, her actions wounded Lucifer, driving him towards Eve (Inbar Lavi), the same Eve from the story of Adam and Eve.
At this stage, it’s clear that the uncertain relationship between them has resurfaced. Despite confessing their feelings for each other in the season 4 finale, Lucifer can’t be with Chloe as he must return to Hell to quell a rebellion among demons. However, once he returns, her awareness of the situation offers advantages (such as her involvement in his quest to become God) and challenges (like Michael abducting her).
What makes Chloe’s knowledge of Lucifer’s true identity special is that, once she overcomes her apprehensions, they can finally become the perfect couple they were destined to be. In fact, they share a child in “Lucifer” Season 6. Although their love on Earth may be brief, it lasts an eternity in Hell.
