Marvel's Long-Delayed 'Nova' Series Finally Takes Major Step Forward

As a movie critic with over two decades of experience in the industry, I’ve seen my fair share of blockbusters and flops alike. The anticipation for Marvel’s long-awaited space saga, Nova, has been building like a cosmic supernova, only to be extinguished by delays and setbacks. However, with the recent addition of Ed Bernero as writer and showrunner, I can’t help but feel a renewed sense of hope for this interstellar adventure.

Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe has produced popular TV series such as WandaVision, Agatha All Along, and Hawkeye (with a few exceptions like Echo and Ms. Marvel), one project that never took flight is particularly intriguing given its space-themed setting. The Nova series, which sparked excitement among fans when the Nova Force appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy, has been on people’s minds since 2019, but updates have been scarce. However, Marvel enthusiasts can now look forward to some positive news about Nova.

For years, Nova has been caught in a cycle of development limbo, but now there’s hope on the horizon with a fresh face taking the helm. Ed Bernero has officially signed on as writer and showrunner for Nova. Bernero has been penning successful shows since the ’90s, focusing mainly on police dramas and crime genres. His most acclaimed work so far is undeniably Criminal Minds, which made its debut in 2005 and is still running in its 18th season.

Bernardo takes over from Sabir Pirzada, who was initially chosen as the writer for the upcoming series “Nova.” Previously, Pirzada worked on Marvel’s controversial series “Moon Knight.” The reason behind Pirzada’s departure from the project remains undisclosed. The long-awaited “Nova” has yet to receive a specific release date or window, as it is currently in its early stages of production with Bernero involved. In July of this year, head of the MCU, Kevin Feige, hinted at when we might see “Nova” on the big screen. He mentioned:

“It’s three or four years out.”

Who is Nova in the MCU?

If you’ve followed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since its Iron Man era, you may recall the term “Nova” being mentioned occasionally. In James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the Nova Force served as the guardians of Xandar, with Glenn Close portraying their leader. Unfortunately, the Nova Force was eliminated by Thanos prior to Infinity War and have not appeared in the MCU since then.

I’ve always admired the character known as Nova, whose real identity is Richard Rider. Born and raised in the bustling city of New York, Richard was hand-picked by the last Centurion of the Nova Force to carry on their powers and assume the role of Nova Prime, the guardian of a once thriving planet. With abilities such as flight, superhuman strength (a trait seemingly ubiquitous among heroes), invincibility, and powerful eye beams at his disposal, Nova has shown time and again that he is a force to be reckoned with. Throughout the annals of Marvel Comics, Nova has donned the mantle of hero, anti-hero, and villain, making his debut all the way back in 1976.

Information about the MCU’s Nova series remains scarce. The destruction of Xandar provides an excellent opportunity for introducing Nova to the Marvel universe, and some fans are eagerly awaiting this event. The last news on the project was in November of this year. Marvel’s TV and streaming chief, Brad Winderbaum, expressed optimism about the show’s future based on early development results, stating that they give him hope for Nova’s success.

“What I’ve seen so far is extremely promising. I will say that.”
