As a Broadway enthusiast with decades of theater-going under my belt, I must say that the current season is shaping up to be one for the books! The recent successes of productions like John Mulaney‘s “All In: Comedy About Love” and the revival of “Gypsy,” starring Audra McDonald, are a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the allure of live performance.
The comedy show “All In: Comedy About Love,” spearheaded by John Mulaney, generated over $1 million in its initial five shows on Broadway.
Simon Rich’s production presents a rotating ensemble, at present consisting of Jon Glaser, Fred Armisen, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and Richard Kind. They perform humorous vignettes that tackle topics like dating, heartache, and matrimony. The show garnered $1.05 million in earnings and was completely sold out at Hudson Theatre, boasting the highest average ticket price in the industry last week with a hefty sum of $216.22 per ticket.
On Monday evening, the grand premiere of the show took place, graced by Lorne Michaels, Pete Davidson, Jon Hamm, Jon Stewart, Anna Wintour, and others. The official opening is scheduled for December 22nd, marking the last Broadway debut in 2024.
Last week, the musical production titled “Gypsy,” featuring Audra McDonald, completed its inaugural week at the Majestic Theatre with eight shows. Surprisingly, it reached a record-breaking gross of $1.8 million, even amidst complimentary performances for press over the weekend. The average attendance for the revival stood impressively high at 97%.
The musical “Swept Away,” initially scheduled to end on December 15th, announced an extension of its run until December 29th, thanks to a spike in ticket sales. Last week alone, the show earned $657,500, a significant increase of $117,194 compared to the previous week. Additionally, the performance capacity at the Longacre Theatre reached an impressive 99.4%.
On Sunday, The Notebook concluded its nine-month stint on Broadway, achieving its top earnings of $1.09 million, and filling the Schoenfeld Theatre to over 100% of its capacity.
Last week’s box office earnings saw “Wicked” leading the pack with an impressive $2.9 million, closely followed by “The Lion King” with $2.5 million, “Hamilton” earning $2.2 million, and “Elf” bringing in $2 million. The top five was completed by “Sunset Blvd.” with a strong $1.9 million.
In summary, the overall earnings of the industry have increased by 4% compared to the previous week and nearly 40% when compared to the same timeframe last season. As we approach the most profitable holiday weeks, this year’s earnings so far are 15% higher than at this point last season.
