Luke Grimes Says Kevin Costner's 'Yellowstone' Exit Made Things Easier

As a long-time connoisseur of western dramas, I must say that the conclusion of Yellowstone Season 5 has left me both satisfied and intrigued. The departure of Kevin Costner, while initially causing a stir, seems to have opened up new opportunities for character development, particularly for Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton.

Warning! Contains SPOILERS from Yellowstone Season 5.

As a follower of the Yellowstone series, I shared Luke Grimes’ sentiments when he expressed that Kevin Costner’s absence during Season 5’s final episodes wasn’t necessarily a negative turn of events for him, at least from my perspective as a viewer. In the narrative, my character, Kayce Dutton, played a pivotal role in preserving the Dutton family’s cherished land from commercial development, following the brutal murder of patriarch John Dutton (Costner).

Nevertheless, Costner’s departure from the show – a series that Grimes surprisingly admitted he wasn’t particularly fond of – might have been advantageous not just for some intriguing plot development, but also for his former co-star. In an interview with Esquire, Grimes stated:

Though I aim to enjoy the show eventually, initially finding it challenging due to my involvement, I plan to wait a few years before diving in again. This break will help me fully appreciate it. Once I’ve revisited all episodes, I believe everyone will understand that the time for this change was right. Frankly, Kevin’s departure reduced some of the drama, making the experience less intense. Of course, this doesn’t mean the remaining filming process was a walk in the park.

Despite Costner controversially exiting Taylor Sheridan and John Linson’s immensely popular neo-Western series to work on the much-maligned movie Horizon, 11.4 million viewers tuned in to witness the Yellowstone Season 5 finale on the Paramount Network (per Variety). And while Grimes will obviously need a little time before he can truly sit down and watch how his character’s arc played out on television, Kayce Dutton will go down as the hero who returned the ranch’s precious lands into the rightful hands.

Gil Birmingham, the actor, commended the “well-written” finale of the show “Yellowstone,” and rightly so. In a particularly emotional scene, Birmingham’s character, Thomas Rainwater, formed a sacred bond with Kayce Dutton (played by Grimes). This significant moment occurred when Kayce returned a prized portion of Montana land to the reservation, although he and his family, including wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and son Tate (Brecken Merrill), will reside at East Camp in the future.

In the same conversation, Grimes commented on how his “cowboy” character found a solution to prevent the valuable land of the Dutton ranch from becoming a commercial development site:

On set, there was a recurring humorous situation where the naive cowboy often solved problems. Kayce, though quiet, is like a coiled spring, and it’s satisfying to see him channel that power for good. He’s a character who has been living in the shadow of his father, preferring anonymity over doing tasks he didn’t want. Now he gets to take charge and sort things out. It was a rewarding moment for me as the writer.

As Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip’s (Cole Hauser) spinoff approaches, fans might wonder if they’ve seen the last of Kayce. Despite the justified actions taken against Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), some may feel that Kayce was given a fitting farewell. For those who missed the final six episodes of Season 5B, including the much-debated finale, “Yellowstone” is now available on popular VOD platforms like Fandango at Home (previously known as Vudu) and is currently on sale for $9.99 – a significant discount from its original price of $23.94.
