As a devoted fan who followed Jeff Bridges‘ career from his early roles in films like “Starman” and “The Big Lebowski,” I was eagerly anticipating the continuation of Dan Chase’s story in “The Old Man.” The first season left me on the edge of my seat, and I was thrilled when it was renewed for a second. However, the delays and setbacks that plagued this series were like watching Dan Chase navigate through an endless maze of obstacles – albeit much less action-packed and far more frustrating.
The drama series The Old Man, featuring Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow, has been terminated by FX. Adapted from Thomas Perry’s acclaimed novel of the same name, The Old Man was created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine and debuted in 2022, returning for a second season in 2024, but unfortunately, this will be its last. According to Deadline’s initial report, production complications surrounding The Old Man diminished viewer engagement, eventually resulting in its termination. The FX suspense-thriller revolves around Bridges’ character Dan Chase, a retired CIA agent compelled to re-engage as he is pursued by his former employer. In addition to Bridges, The Old Man stars Lithgow as former FBI Assistant Director Harold Harper, who shares a long, complex history with Chase that evolves throughout the series. Also in the cast is Alia Shawkat as FBI Agent Angela Adams, who is Harper’s protege and, as viewers discover, Chase’s estranged daughter.
Since its debut, the show has faced numerous production hurdles. Initially, filming was halted during the first season because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Later, the crew resumed work but had to pause again when Jeff Bridges was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. During his treatment, he contracted Covid-19 as well. The first critically acclaimed season finally wrapped up when Bridges went into remission approximately a year later. Unfortunately, the shooting of the second season was postponed again due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I eagerly anticipated the return of “The Old Man” this September, but unfortunately, it didn’t meet the high expectations set by its exceptional first season. Critics have been less than impressed with the show’s second season, labeling it as tedious, tangled, and turgid. In contrast, the initial season of “The Old Man” boasted a remarkable 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while the second season has dropped significantly to 64%. This popular series debuted on Hulu in 2022, becoming the most-watched FX series premiere during its opening weekend. It garnered critical acclaim and was swiftly renewed for a second season. In addition, the first season received numerous accolades, including an Emmy nomination for Kevin Bacon and Golden Globe nods for both Bacon and John Lithgow.
‘The Old Man’ Season 3 Would Have Explored Dan’s Relationship with His Daughter
Recently, not long after the second season ended, Bridges and Steinberg spoke to The Wrap regarding their aspirations for Season 3. Bridges revealed he had agreed to return for three seasons and enjoyed working with the cast and crew. He showed enthusiasm about where the story is heading. On the other hand, Steinberg subtly suggested that Season 3 would explore the blossoming relationship between Bridges’ character Chase and Shawkat’s Angela.
Steinberg shared, “Though a great deal of their personal stories have unfolded, Jeff and Alia’s characters are only just beginning to interact significantly. I can’t wait to see how they navigate sharing the plot in Season 3, as they won’t have the luxury of using phones for distance. The story we’re creating and the team behind it are both shaping up nicely.
It’s unfortunate that followers of The Old Man series won’t get to witness the continuation of Dan Chase’s tale, particularly his evolving relationship with his newly found daughter. However, it seems that Jeff Bridges isn’t slowing down at all; he has numerous upcoming projects on his plate. For instance, you can expect him in Tron: Ares next year, where he shares the screen with Johnny Depp and Adam Driver. Additionally, he will star in The Carnival at the End of Days alongside Johnny Depp and Adam Driver. Lastly, he’ll lend his voice to Grendel as the main character.
Both seasons of The Old Man are available to stream on Hulu.
