As a long-time connoisseur of dark and twisted TV shows, I must say that my heart skipped a beat when I heard about the return of Dexter Morgan in “Dexter: Original Sin”. Having been captivated by his complex character since the original series, I was thrilled to dive deeper into his past, particularly his relationship with his father, Harry.

As a movie enthusiast, if you’ve ever delved into the world of Dexter, you’re probably familiar with its central theme: a man named Dexter who eliminates evil-doers to fulfill his inner compulsions. From the get-go, Dexter has been committed to this deadly lifestyle, no longer trying to hide his inclinations. I’ve often pondered about how he came to be this way and why his father never intervened but instead seemed to support him. However, Christian Slater in the series ‘Original Sin’ provided a compelling explanation that finally made sense.
In the show Dexter: Original Sin, viewers delve deep into the life of the title character, Dexter, particularly his bond with his father, Harry, portrayed by Christian Slater. Before the series debut, I had an opportunity to interview Slater for TopMob, inquiring if there was ever a plan for Harry to halt Dexter’s actions, as it appears he yields during the initial episode.
Slater noted that Harry indeed expressed a wish to control his son’s actions at one time, and Dex did endeavor to redirect his impulses through pursuits such as medical studies and hunting. However, eventually, he found himself needing to “let go” since none of the attempts seemed effective. Here’s how Slater described it:
It seems to me that he was convinced that he could guide his actions somehow, like taking Dexter hunting or enrolling him in medical school to control his instincts. However, it quickly becomes apparent that these attempts are futile, as his darker tendencies only intensify. Harry tries to restrain him, but eventually realizes that he must let go and accept the path that lies ahead. In a sense, Harry provides Dexter with the approval or green light, leaving him in a difficult situation, yet making the decision to follow it.
Why Dexter Is Still Worth Rewatching, Even With Its Controversial Ending
In the premier of Original Sin, the audience witnesses Dexter taking his first life, followed by a conversation with Harry about it later on. However, when Harry is left on his own, he sheds tears, as he understands this act marks just the start of Dexter’s deadly journey. Now, with Harry’s approval, Dexter can exercise greater autonomy in his actions – which translates to increased freedom step by step.
In case some might find themselves needing a refresher, Harry in the original Dexter series (one of Showtime’s finest) was almost like a ghostly figure. The character, portrayed by James Remar on the initial show, had already passed away within the storyline at the time being discussed. Luckily, Original Sin offers the writers a chance to delve deeper into Dexter and Harry’s connection, which sheds light on why Harry didn’t play as significant a role before. It becomes clear now that he had already accomplished so much in the past, but when there’s only one effective method, sometimes you must yield.
I can’t wait to delve deeper into the backstory of this spinoff series, “Dexter: Original Sin.” According to Clyde Phillips, the inspiration for its creation was the talented team he had working with him. Frankly, I find the expanded narrative and characters absolutely captivating, and I must say, Michael C. Hall’s reprisal of his role is nothing short of brilliant after “New Blood.” Of course, I’ll be eagerly anticipating more details as new episodes roll out. For now, I’m thrilled with the insights provided so far, especially Christian Slater clarifying a crucial plot point for me.
