As a seasoned card game enthusiast and someone who has spent countless hours shuffling decks and counting points, I must say that Balatro has left quite an impression on me. This isn’t your grandma’s solitaire or hearts, let me tell you!
After The Game Awards concluded, we’re once again in the routine of anticipating the next major AAA release. While there were significant announcements and winners, what left many puzzled wasn’t just Black Myth: Wukong not winning Game of the Year, but rather the intriguing introduction of an otherworldly card game that stole everyone’s focus.
It’s Balatro.
This game captured three accolades during the event: “Best Independent Title“, “Standout Debut” for indie games, and “Top Mobile Game.“. Everyone seems to be raving about this game. However, I must admit that I was skeptical when it came to a poker-themed game. But once I began playing it, I found myself completely captivated.
What on earth is Balatro? Allow me to explain: this game is akin to an irresistible drug that hooked you from the start. It’s a sly dopamine delivery system masquerading as a card game. If you’re not cautious, you might find yourself wasting your entire day while amassing multipliers for your run.
This piece isn’t about giving directions or reporting the latest news. Instead, it serves as an enlightening article about Balatro, a game I believe truly deserves all the accolades. In fact, it managed to surpass Videogamedunkey’s Animal Well, which happens to be my top pick of the year.
How Does This Game Work!?
In simpler terms, Balatro can be described as a game that falls under the category of roguelikes. If you’ve listened to your friends who are fanatics about Hades II or Slay The Spire talking excitedly, you’ll have a good idea of what it entails – an ongoing cycle of challenge and reward. However, Balatro introduces poker mechanics into the eternal loop of the roguelike genre, giving it a unique twist.
As a gamer, let me break it down for you: The rules are simple and straight-forward. You kick off by diving into a classic ‘run’ (a common feature in roguelikes). From there, you select your deck. Each run consists of eight antes (levels) with three blinds (bosses) of escalating challenge. Your main objective? Aim for the target score. For example, the first blind demands 300 points (or chips), so you’ll need to craft poker hands that yield the highest score possible. A Straight Flush will reward you with a massive payout, while Two of a Kind won’t be as generous.
The catch? You only have limited moves and discards per blind, so you need to make each hand count.
It’s Not Poker!?
If you’re not a fan of poker, that’s perfectly fine! Balatro provides an extensive guide to assist you in interpreting your hand. You can find it conveniently placed right beneath your ‘Mults’ or multipliers. However, do note that poker serves as the game’s theme. While you’ll still use conventional hands for scoring, the longer you play, the more the game deviates from poker’s straightforward nature.
Delve into the unusual deck: Tarot, Planet, and Joker cards. You may ponder their peculiar inclusion in a traditional card game like poker.
Who Are Jimbo and the Jokers!?
The true enchantment in Balatro stems from its Joker cards. Initially, Balatro seems similar to poker, but soon it veers off into the unexpected. There you’ll encounter Jimbo, the game’s whimsical emblem and our unpredictable guide. He isn’t working alone, mind you. A troop of Jokers is at his side, ready to assist us in scoring substantial wins.
Jokers serve as game-changing boosts. They’re unique features that can drastically alter the course of your play. Some increase the value of Diamonds by 10 when played, while others interact with your poker hands. As more Jokers accumulate, your gaming experience becomes increasingly intense, with multipliers soaring to incredible heights.
In Balatro, you’ll find 150 distinct Jokers, each with special abilities that could either help or hinder your gameplay. My preferred one is Chicot, an extraordinary Joker, capable of disabling a Boss Blind’s modifiers, making boss battles significantly easier to handle as I can concentrate on increasing multipliers instead.
As you initially set sail with a humble collection of cards, each Joker you gather amplifies the intricacy of your gameplay strategies. Balatro, in essence, is more straightforward to grasp through experience rather than detailed explanation.
There’s More!?
In the game, Jokers play a pivotal role as main attractions. However, Planet Cards and Tarot Cards provide an additional dimension to your gameplay strategy. Essentially, these cards function as enhancements for your deck that can be utilized.
Following every round I play without knowing my cards (Blind), I accumulate cash to purchase Booster Packs at local stores. These packs hold a variety of unique card types inside them.
- Buffoon Packs give you Jokers.
- Celestial Packs contain Planet Cards.
- Arcana Packs provides Tarot Cards.
- and more (which you need to find for yourself)
For example, Jupiter (a Planet Card) boosts Flush hands, granting extra multipliers for consistently playing Flushes. Other Planet Cards reward bonuses for Straight Flushes, Full Houses, and more.
Utilizing Tarot Cards can amplify the strength of your deck, with certain cards being refined individually, while others are transformed into even more potent variants.
As a gamer, when I draw The Empress Tarot Card, it’s like I’ve found a rare power-up that doubles the strength of two other cards in my deck. On the other hand, when I pull The Lovers, it’s like I’ve been given a joker card, which I can use to wildly adapt and strategize with any chosen card in my hand.
Make sure to check on the state of your cards regularly. The cleaner and well-maintained they appear, the stronger their abilities might be. I encourage you to personally explore their attributes.
I Can’t Stop Playing!!!
Initially, when I started using it, I invested an excessive amount of time on it. Somehow, I find myself unable to quit playing it now. Perhaps it’s the charm of discovering superior Jokers in the next round or the excitement of seeing my scores climb higher that keeps me hooked.
It’s pretty addicting, I must say. And it’s not something you can play when you’re pressed for time; otherwise, you can kiss those responsibilities goodbye.
As an enthusiast, I’d rather let Balatro speak for itself! If you’re intrigued and want to delve deeper into this captivating game, why not give it a spin? It’s widely available across all modern consoles and mobile devices, so there’s no excuse left for not experiencing the thrill firsthand.
As a captivated enthusiast, I’d sum up my experience with Balatro thusly: This roguelike card game, built upon the foundation of poker, metamorphoses into an uncontrollable obsession, offering an endless journey of profundity, fun (and insanity)!
