As a seasoned gamer who has journeyed through countless consoles and controllers, I must say that the PlayStation 5 has truly left me spellbound. It’s not just about the state-of-the-art graphics or the lightning-fast load times; it’s the sheer joy of exploration, the thrill of discovery, and the nostalgia it evokes that makes this console a game-changer (pun intended).
At last, we’ve wrapped up our PlayStation 30th Anniversary collection with the PlayStation 5… Sony’s top-tier console, which significantly transformed the landscape of next-gen gaming.
Three decades of groundbreaking PlayStation advancements reached their pinnacle with this potent device. It ushered in gaming at a smooth 60 frames per second and stunning 4K resolution, redefining the benchmark for console performance. Its PRO variant has raised the bar even higher, making games sharper and faster than ever before.
The PlayStation 5 offers a major advancement in technology, primarily due to its Solid State Drive (SSD), support for controller haptic feedback, and effortless backwards compatibility. This upgrade is well worth it as it skillfully integrates the top features from past console generations into one sturdy engineering marvel.
During the difficult period of the COVID-19 pandemic, the console was released. However, due to a severe scarcity worsened by resellers known as scalpers, gamers, including myself, universally felt that scalpers were the most annoying.
Wrapping up our celebration of 30 years with the PlayStation, here are my top five selections of games that made an indelible mark on this exceptional console.
Demon’s Souls
The game that convinced me to buy a PlayStation 5 wasn’t the new God of War. Instead, it was Bluepoint Studios’ remake of FromSoftware’s beloved Demon’s Souls. When it comes to high-quality reimaginings, Bluepoint deserves all the praise.
In essence, Demon’s Souls remains very similar to its 2009 release on PlayStation 3. Despite being challenging and punishing, it played a significant role in shaping Hidetaka Miyazaki’s future Souls series. We should acknowledge his creativity for this contribution. After all, the hardships we face have often been a source of his creative inspiration – much like the game Elden Ring.
The revamped version of this game is a remarkable feat, managing to both retain the fundamental play mechanics of its predecessor while giving it a total facelift in terms of graphics. Every aspect, from the very first dragon you meet to the ultimate boss battle, exhibits extraordinary detail and precision. Gone are the days of struggling with the problematic camera system or dealing with absurd glitches – they’ve been addressed in this version!
In the initial reveal of the PlayStation 5’s power, Sony demonstrated the remake of Demon’s Souls. Each strike felt tangible with the DualSense controller, and every character movement was noticeable. Moreover, the respawn times following death were significantly reduced, a welcome change considering how frequently that occurs.
Returnal
Among the notable games released alongside the PlayStation 5 was the swift roguelike: Returnal. Housemarque effectively built upon their past work with Resogun and Matterfall, creating a game that resembles Hades or Dead Cells but boasts the quality and grandeur of a top-tier production. In other words, that’s Returnal for you.
Among the elements I enjoy most about this game is its user-friendly controls that require quick reactions as you maneuver past persistent Lovecraftian monsters. Using the DualSense controller enhances the experience significantly, making each movement and action feel truly rewarding. The adaptive triggers provide a sense of weight to every shot, emphasizing the importance of every bullet fired.
In the game Returnal, Selene’s ordeals primarily consisted of enduring numerous terrifying encounters. However, I didn’t find it burdensome since these challenges were inherent to the roguelike genre. Despite meeting my demise around 200 times, I continued to confront the nightmare once more, seeking to enhance my abilities and pursuing better loot drops.
When it comes to earning the Platinum trophy, I’ve thrown in the towel. Apparently, RNG (Random Number Generation) isn’t working in my favor, and I just couldn’t stick with it long enough.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
As a gamer, I can’t help but give kudos to Square Enix for their daring revamp of an all-time favorite. The iconic classic, Final Fantasy VII, is one of the most acclaimed JRPGs out there; you might remember my glowing review from my PlayStation One retrospective.
As a gamer, I’m super excited about Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth! It’s the next chapter in Tetsuya Nomura’s genius plan to revisit Cloud and the crew’s epic journey as they take on the enigmatic silver-haired villain, Sephiroth.
In this contemporary retelling, the classic tale has been revitalized and expanded into an epic trilogy. The first installment, the Remake, delves into the struggles of the gang in Midgar against Shinra Corporation, while the second part, Rebirth, continues the adventure with a world-spanning quest to locate Sephiroth.
The Disc 2 section from the original is one of my favorite moments, and Rebirth perfectly captures that expansive, open-world feeling. Despite the improved combat and fancy new graphics, I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic, especially when exploring the overworld and hearing that iconic theme again.
Despite a few hiccups in pace and an excess of side activities (the majority being optional), the core narrative of Rebirth resonated deeply with me. By the time the end credits appeared, I found myself pondering where Part 3 might lead us, a thought that surprised me given my familiarity with the initial release.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
In Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Insomniac Games demonstrates the blazingly fast speed of the PlayStation 5’s SSD technology. This next-gen hardware significantly enhances the experience of Ratchet and Clank’s thrilling escapades, making transitions between portals smooth as silk and almost eliminating loading times, allowing you to enjoy the captivating storyline without interruption.
Among the fantastic features of each Ratchet & Clank game lies the vast array of weapon choices. Messing around with Nefarious’ minions using the Topiary Sprinkler gun, transforming them into plants and making them defenseless, never fails to amuse. It’s a lot of fun witnessing how powerful most weapons are, reaching a point where even boss battles seem effortless once you get the hang of them.
This game isn’t overly long, and that seems suitable for the franchise. I can’t wait to follow along with Ratchet and Clank’s adventures as they continue.
Astro Bot
Although some may argue differently online, Astro Bot truly deserves all the praise it has been given. It serves as an exemplary demonstration of how video games have progressed over time while maintaining the fundamental essence of what makes a game enjoyable. Every aspect of Astro Bot is designed with joy in mind, and throughout its 20-hour journey, I couldn’t help but smile at the discovery of new skills or encounters with familiar characters.
Apart from navigating through planets or speeding past adversaries using the tools provided in Astro Bot, I was captivated by its unique Bots. Astro Bot stands out as an extraordinary tribute to gaming, filled with hidden references (Easter eggs) and appearances from diverse gaming series.
As I played through the game, I came across characters such as Crash Bandicoot, Lara Croft, or even Jaster from Roggue Galaxy. This stirred up a flood of nostalgia within me. These games were a big part of my childhood, and Astro Bot made me realize just how significant their influence was on me. It might seem corny to say it, but it genuinely brought a smile to my face.
Astro Bot serves as an affectionate homage to the world of video gaming. To wrap up our PlayStation 30th Anniversary reflections in a meaningful manner, let’s end with this heartwarming salute instead.
