As a longtime fan of Superman, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and nostalgia upon learning about James Gunn’s reboot. Having grown up watching Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of the Man of Steel, I was initially skeptical about this new interpretation. But hearing that Gunn is drawing inspiration from both Richard Donner and Zack Snyder, as well as the comic books, gives me hope that this will be a Superman film for everyone – just like it should be.

Previously knowing very little about James Gunn’s reboot of a certain character, we now have a lot more information, and this latest detail should make fans of that character and Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman feel somewhat reassured. During a set visit in Cleveland, Ohio back in June (with the embargo finally lifted), Gunn shared his motivations for resurrecting the DC superhero on the big screen once more. Remarkably, he is drawing inspiration from films by both Richard Donner and Zack Snyder.

I’ve been strongly impacted by various forms of DC media throughout my career. The original Donner movie was undoubtedly influential, but it’s not just about making another Donner-style film. Instead, my work departs significantly from that. Zack Snyder has done commendable work, and his contributions have also left their mark on me. Influences come from multiple directions: the DC animated universe, Snyder’s creations, and especially the comic books themselves, particularly All-Star Superman, which has had a profound impact on my work compared to other sources.

James Gunn’s revamp of the Superman character has sparked some criticism from fans of Zack Snyder, especially since Henry Cavill was abruptly replaced following his appearance in a Black Adam post-credits scene (which may not have been related to Gunn’s decisions). However, as Gunn delves into the past events, skeptics might find comfort knowing this will be a Superman film for all audiences. Given the character at hand, that’s exactly what it should strive to be.

Initially titled “Superman: Legacy”, the focus of this new Superman story has shifted from reflecting on the past to embracing the future. As director James Gunn explained to Gizmodo, he decided to change the title because “Superman” isn’t primarily about reminiscing.

Initially, the title seemed to convey a sense of reminiscing. However, the movie isn’t focused on reminiscing; it’s more about moving forward. Although the concept of ‘Legacy’ becomes clear once you watch the film, as it deals with Clark’s relationships with his Kryptonian and human parents and who he truly embodies. I felt that as a title, it gave an overly nostalgic impression.

In this series, David Corenswet takes on the roles of both Clark Kent/Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan portrays Lois Lane. The ensemble also includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason / Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica / The Engineer, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, and Neva Howell as Martha Kent.
