Say It Ain’t So: FX And Netflix Both Cancelled TV Shows Recently, And Neither Were First Season Shows

As a film enthusiast with over three decades of experiencing the rise and fall of beloved shows, I can’t help but feel a twinge of sadness as I see two more fan-favorites join the list of canceled series this year – The Old Man on FX and Girls5Eva on Netflix.

As we move towards the end of the 2024 TV premiere schedule and the holiday season, networks and streaming services are still trimming their lineups by canceling shows this year. Far from it, in fact. Although there had been little chatter about cancellations in recent weeks, as Fall TV took center stage, we’ve recently seen not one, but two shows being axed. It’s fortunate that neither of these shows were freshman series.

Let’s examine those highly acclaimed series that sadly got canceled and discuss possible reasons why they didn’t end up making it to the TV schedule for 2025.

FX Canceled The Old Man, No Season 3 Happening

Making its debut in 2022 following production delays due to COVID-19 and a break taken by its leading actor due to cancer treatments, “The Old Man” stars Jeff Bridges as a retired CIA agent who takes off after he kills a home intruder. The FBI high-rank is on the hunt for Dan Chase, but their shared military past won’t deter him from his objective: taking Chase down.

Overall, the show “The Old Man” proved to be a significant success for FX and Hulu, becoming the largest cable premiere of the year. It swiftly garnered a renewal for a second season, in addition to numerous award nominations and accolades. Regrettably, production on Season 2 faced hold-ups due to Hollywood strikes in 2023, resulting in a delay of 27 months before the second season was released, following the conclusion of Season 1.

The entertainment news outlet Deadline announced that after only 15 episodes over a span of five years, the series “The Old Man” has been canceled. This decision may have resulted from a combination of factors such as low viewership, limited recognition among audiences, and possibly budget constraints. It’s worth noting that Jeff Bridges was reportedly earning a million dollars per episode when the show was in development back in 2019.

Netflix Seemingly Canceled Girls5Eva, No Season 4 Happening

Although Netflix hasn’t publicly announced the show’s status yet, Busy Phillips discussed its uncertain future on her podcast “Busy Philips Is Doing Her Best”. During a conversation with guest Danny Pellegrino, when asked about the destiny of “Girls5Eva”, this is how Philips responded.

It’s no longer active. To put it simply, if Netflix doesn’t revive it, I might as well. It seems that not many viewers tuned in, or perhaps their viewership didn’t matter in the way that counts, honestly, I’m not sure.

In a more spontaneous manner, Philips expressed her belief that the very title of the show may have acted as an obstacle for some viewers. She doesn’t expect any official cancellation notice from the streaming service at this point. Her rationale being…

Netflix hasn’t declared it as over, but since their arrangement with Peacock is only for the third season, they aren’t obligated to comment on its future beyond that point.

Since Netflix only produced one season of the musical comedy, their involvement in making decisions about it is now finished. As Busy Philipps hasn’t confirmed if Peacock will take over, it remains uncertain whether the show will continue or not.

In essence, Philips is hopeful that the characters from Girls5Eva won’t disappear forever due to their appeal, as she deems them “exceptional.” She has even playfully discussed the idea of showcasing their performances at Radio City and potentially transforming it into a live stage musical on Broadway. Furthermore, she hinted at a humorous song about being canceled, perhaps satirizing Netflix in some way.

Currently, supporters can continue enjoying “The Old Man” through their Hulu membership, whereas “Girls5Eva” remains accessible via Netflix.
