As a longtime comic book enthusiast and someone who’s grown up with Spider-Man being an integral part of my childhood, it’s been a rollercoaster watching Sony’s attempts at building their own Spiderverse. With a treasure trove of characters at their disposal, they had the potential to create a cinematic universe that could rival Marvel Studios. Alas, it seems they’ve squandered this opportunity, much like a kid with a new toy who doesn’t quite understand its value.
Despite garnering great anticipation among comic book aficionados who recognized the character’s potential, Kraven the Hunter has faced harsh criticism from critics. Although much of the criticism is warranted, there has been one unexpected positive outcome from Sony’s latest Spider-Verse production. Interestingly enough, this positive aspect has primarily stemmed from a character other than Kraven himself.
Despite all the critical gloom currently encircling Sony’s latest standalone installment from the Spiderverse, Calypso Ezili has stuck out as one good thing about the film. A character steeped in a blend of dark magic and very engaging forms of mysticism, Calypso often stole the spotlight — from Aaron Taylor-Johnson, no less, who’s usually magnetic and easily commands the most on-screen attention whenever he’s been the lead in a film. The issues inherent in the film aside here’s a look at why Calypso is actually the perfect character to take the Spiderverse forward — that is if it continues.

In line with what fans of comic books anticipated, Calypso played a crucial part in the story of Kraven the Hunter. This wasn’t merely by chance, as per the established narrative of the comics, she was indeed well-suited for such a role. Known for her intricate bond with Kraven and her knack for causing turmoil, her destructive activities often overshadow his villainous exploits. Moreover, Calypso has always been an appealing character due to her distinctive appearance (often portrayed as both fearsome and beautiful) and her diverse magical abilities that span from mind manipulation to reanimation.
For a long time, among comic book enthusiasts, the character in question has been a dream role that many had been eagerly anticipating and speculating about. Eventually, Ariana DeBose took on this role, and while some fans had hoped for South African actress Pearl Thusi to play it, Ariana DeBose’s performance was widely regarded as an admirable portrayal in numerous aspects. However, not all fans agreed that the character was a faithful adaptation of the comic book version.
In the world of comics, she’s recognized for boosting Kraven’s abilities while simultaneously transcending the role of a straightforward adversary. Her complexity allows her to evolve from a secondary figure into a mysterious force in narratives involving Kraven the Hunter and often Spider-Man indirectly. As a villain for Spiderman, she offers a darker, more psychologically challenging aspect because she doesn’t rely on physical strength or brute force to cause him harm. Her unpredictability frequently makes her a wildcard, presenting challenges that Spiderman has found difficult to conquer.
Calypso Ezili in Marvel and Her Relationship with Kraven
As a film enthusiast, I’ve always found myself drawn to characters with layers, and Ula, the Voodoo Priestess, is one such character who never fails to intrigue me. While her mystical background often takes center stage in her story arcs, there’s so much more to her than meets the eye.
Although she’s often portrayed as working from behind the scenes, it can be argued that she is the real antagonist due to her repeated cycles of death and rebirth for Kraven. However, her character is rarely given center stage in comparison to other villains. In essence, Kraven serves as a pawn for her personal conflicts. Her blend of mystery, power, manipulation, and malevolent plans suggests she poses a greater threat than Kraven himself.
A Deeper Look at Calypso’s Backstory
The background of Calypso is largely veiled in secrecy, which has contributed to her being an enticing figure. As portrayed in the comics, she hails from Haiti and gains her power through dark Voodoo sorcery. Her relationship with Kraven arises because she casts a spell on him. Interestingly, this bond is reciprocal, as she feeds off the turmoil caused by amplifying his negative traits.
Her past, particularly her upbringing in Haiti, has shown a complex and painful history. This shaped her into a character with a profound cynicism towards the world, seeking to assert control over what she saw as an unjust system. Although she is generally portrayed as a villain, there are layers to her backstory that could be delved into in future films should the Spider-Verse continue. However, it appears that this may not happen now.
The Missteps of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
At one point, it appeared as though Sony recognized they had stumbled upon a veritable treasure trove of virtual riches. With the rights to Spider-Man, Marvel’s foremost character, came ownership over an extensive collection of other captivating and well-liked characters as well. The Spiderverse wasn’t something Sony created but rather a universe that was already recognized by comic book enthusiasts before the advent of the MCU. Having command over this entire realm provided Sony with an opportunity to effortlessly construct their own superhero empire centered around this character and his numerous compelling allies and adversaries.
Even though Sony had a wealth of opportunity with their Spider-Verse, much like a child who doesn’t understand the value of their parents’ checkbook, Sony appears not to have fully comprehended the richness they possessed. They did attempt to utilize these resources for long-term success, but their implementation has been dismal. As a result, it seems increasingly likely that Sony’s Spider-Verse is being shut down, and thankfully so! For any dedicated Spider-Man fan, it’s been agonizing to see iconic characters reduced to mere caricatures or neglected entirely.
