As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen the rise and fall of many online multiplayer games. From the early days of Quake to the modern-day hero shooters like Overwatch and Marvel Rivals, I’ve played them all.
The potential rival to Overwatch by Blizzard might be Marvel Rivals, a game recently released that could mark the beginning of Overwatch’s downfall. This game, developed by Marvel and NetEase, is poised to introduce a new age in hero-shooter games and has the components to overtake Blizzard’s popular title.
In its debut week, Marvel Rivals attracted more than 480,000 players on Steam alone. Consider the number of people engaged in combat as their preferred Marvel characters across other platforms – consoles included.
Achieving the title of ‘Overwatch Killer‘ is no simple task. Numerous games that endeavored to rival Blizzard’s highly acclaimed hero-shooter have failed in their attempts. Games such as Hi-Rez’s Paladins and Firewalk Studios’ Concord attempted the challenge, but they were unable to surpass Overwatch’s devoted community.
To make things clear, I’m equally fond of Overwatch and Marvel Rivals. In fact, I’ve invested more than a thousand hours into the original Overwatch, with that number growing even further upon the release of Overwatch 2. However, when I started playing Marvel Rivals, it brought back the same thrill I felt during Overwatch’s debut in 2016. It was a whirlwind of excitement, sheer fun, and most significantly, enjoyable gameplay.
Indeed, does Marvel Rivals live up to the hype as the long-awaited ‘Overwatch competitor’ everyone’s been buzzing about? Here, we’ll examine the strengths and weaknesses of each game.
Overwatch is Optimized
Regardless of personal feelings towards it, Overwatch by Blizzard showcases exceptional technical skill. This fast-paced hero shooter performs seamlessly, delivering a smooth gameplay experience on a variety of computer systems, including less powerful ones.
Despite its busy and chaotic battle scenes, Overwatch’s performance is consistently smooth, particularly on high-end systems where it runs smoothly like melted butter. Remarkably, even when tested on a less powerful public computer, the game functioned surprisingly well, showcasing Blizzard’s exceptional engineering abilities.
Marvel Rivals isn’t Optimized
Instead of Marvel Rivals running smoothly, it encounters significant optimization problems. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, it’s experiencing performance glitches such as dropped frames, memory leaks, and in severe cases, abrupt crashes. Numerous players have voiced their concerns on Reddit forums, leading NetEase to promise upcoming updates.
If your FPS drops to 12, Doctor Strange might summon his portal nearby.
To give credit where it’s deserved, it’s important to acknowledge that the game’s servers functioned smoothly at its debut, an impressive accomplishment for a fresh online multiplayer game.
Overwatch has Role Queue
In the early version of Overwatch, there was a major problem with the uneven distribution of hero power levels, especially during the infamous “GOATS” meta where teams would field six defensive heroes (three tanks and three healers). This inconsistency caused frustration for both casual players and professionals, as matches often became repetitive and dull.
Blizzard’s Role Queue aims to bring order out of the disorder in the game. By limiting teams to a specific number of tanks, damage dealers, and healers, it helps maintain balance within the game. However, one disadvantage is that matchmaking times, particularly for those choosing damage roles, have extended significantly.
As a dedicated gamer immersed in the world of Overwatch 2, I’ve found that the Role Queue system has become my go-to gameplay setup. It’s not just me; this setup seems to be favored by most players and plays a crucial role in its competitive esports scene.
Marvel Rivals has no Role Queue
As a gaming enthusiast, Marvel Rivals offers an exhilarating twist: the freedom to craft teams using any blend of roles. It’s like playing Overwatch, but with a dash of vanilla flavor! Fancy having three healers or tanks? Why not give it a shot! The essence here is all about enjoyment and exploration, rather than being tied down by strict rules.
For recreational gamers, the freedom to choose any role is fun. However, in competitive play, it can be problematic since everyone tends to pick Damage instead of Healer or Tank. Some gamers and experts are advocating for a system that assigns roles (Role Queue), but the developers prefer encouraging player creativity over enforcing strict role assignments.
Striking a balance in this setup might become tough down the line, yet it’s what makes Marvel Rivals distinct from Overwatch. We’ll have to wait and see which method ultimately proves to be more enduring.
Overwatch Heroes have Identity
When Overwatch first debuted, it significantly transformed the hero-shooter category by introducing a varied assortment of characters. From a robotic monk to a gorilla fond of peanut butter, Blizzard crafted an eccentric and impactful roster that resonated with players. These unique personas were a significant attraction for the game and many more as well.
Marvel Rivals’ Heroes don’t have Identity
Although Marvel Rivals showcases popular Marvel figures, some players find that the characters’ gameplay feels like imitations of those in Overwatch, as many of their abilities are quite similar.
For example, Hawkeye resembles Hanzo but with a wakizashi for pushing enemies away. Scarlet Witch mimics Moira with her aim-free primary ability. Doctor Strange has Reinhardt’s shield (and UI), while Spider-Man and Iron Fist share similarities with Genji. Also, why can’t Magneto fly!?
While I’m generally impressed by the creativity in most shows, there are some exceptions that truly shine. For instance, the dual-character mechanics in Cloak & Dagger are nothing short of innovative. And when it comes to standout abilities, Jeff the Land Shark’s terrifying ultimate is hard to beat!
Although the characters’ skills aren’t particularly unique, they don’t diminish the overall enjoyment that the game offers.
Overwatch Gave Up on its Lore
I’m still disappointed that Blizzard decided to abandon the much-awaited PvE setup. Yet, I understand it was a crucial move for the enduring success of their multiplayer shooter (and also the launch of another Kiriko skin).
Back in the day, Overwatch’s lore used to be a hot topic among us gamers. Every new hero introduced something fresh and exciting to Blizzard’s sci-fi world, and their cinematic trailers really added to the hype. However, it’s a pity that Blizzard decided not to develop a coherent storyline but rather focus solely on online PvP battles. There was so much potential for us to delve deeper into these characters’ stories, but now it seems like only fan-made stories can bring them back to life again.
Marvel Rivals has Promising Lore
Marvel Rivals kicks off by providing a substantial backstory, while its regular updates feature interactive comic strips that highlight crucial happenings within the game.
The tale kickstarts with Doctor Doom engaging in his habitual wicked deeds. Following an encounter with his 2099 equivalent, Doom sets off a time-stream tangle that spawns new realities. This incident provides access to the multiverse’s turmoil, accounting for the emergence of alternate versions of renowned Marvel heroes.
As I dive into each new gaming season, I’m always drawn to the main tale that unfolds. It’s not just comic book die-hards who find it captivating; even casual gamers like me can appreciate the engaging narrative. You can catch up on all the details in the Gallery tab whenever you want.
In their own ways, both Overwatch and Marvel’s Multiplayer Game offer distinct advantages. Although it remains uncertain whether Marvel’s Multiplayer Game will overtake Overwatch, it certainly demonstrates potential to be a leading contender for the top hero-shooter of next year.
The ability of NetEase to sustain its current pace hinges on their management of upcoming adjustments and enhancements. It’s a given that the rivalry is intensifying, meaning players from either side can expect an exhilarating journey ahead.
