Mercedes-Benz Leverages AI To Provide “Human-Like Conversations” via Its Voice Assistant

As a gamer with a knack for technology and a deep appreciation for seamless, intuitive interfaces, I must say, the latest update from Mercedes-Benz to its MBUX Voice Assistant is nothing short of revolutionary! Having spent countless hours interacting with AI in video games, I can attest that this new feature brings us one step closer to having real conversations with our vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a major overhaul for its MBUX Voice Assistant, incorporating an AI-powered feature that provides immediate, conversational replies in everyday language. The new technology employs Microsoft’s ChatGPT tech through Azure OpenAI Service and includes Bing search functionality, allowing users to engage in more lifelike discussions with their vehicles.

The upgraded assistant is capable of responding to a variety of general knowledge queries across fields such as pop culture, science, and history. It also offers context-sensitive follow-up responses, ensuring that conversations flow smoothly and intuitively. For instance, a user could ask, “How many Grammy awards has a specific artist received?” followed by “What year did they win their first one?”, without having to repeat the topic.

Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes-Benz, stated that by incorporating an AI-powered knowledge feature into our MBUX Voice Assistant, we aim to simplify the interaction between customers and their vehicles, making it more enjoyable and beneficial.

Starting from today, an update for the MBUX infotainment system is being distributed globally to more than three million vehicles. This upgrade was initially introduced in German, British, and American English languages. You can activate this new feature using the phrase “Hey Mercedes” or by pressing the speech button on your steering wheel.

Regarding data protection, Mercedes-Benz asserts that any voice recordings are stripped of personal identifiers (anonymized) before processing happens securely within their intelligent cloud system, Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Cloud. Furthermore, they’ve incorporated a risk analysis tool to ensure the system doesn’t generate harmful or inappropriate responses.
