Max Takes a Cue From Spotify, Rolls Out “Max Rewind” Yearly Recap

As a seasoned gamer and streaming enthusiast with decades of digital entertainment under my belt, I must say that Max Rewind has piqued my interest. The concept is reminiscent of my days spent on platforms like Myspace and Last.fm, where personalization was key to the user experience.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service Max is following in the footsteps of Spotify by creating a customized annual review for users, which they are referring to as “Max Rewind.

Max Rewind is designed to be easily shared across social media platforms. It offers a retrospective glance at platform trends and an overview of the user’s viewing habits, such as preferred brands, genres, watch patterns, custom avatars, and more. Each user will have a unique character assigned based on their watch history, with tailored viewing suggestions for each persona (for example, “Trendsetter”).

Most users are expected to get a notification this coming Thursday about our new recap feature. This feature underwent testing with a limited number of users last year, and it’s set for its full launch to all our subscribers for the first time in 2024.

The proposed concept for a streaming video service isn’t entirely novel, as there are precedents for similar products. For instance, Spotify has been thriving with Spotify Wrapped, an annual event that blends platform-wide trends with individual listening habits. This customized compilation is eagerly anticipated by Spotify users each year.

It makes sense that video platforms like Max would want to join the party.
