When Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s DDLJ co-star Mandira Bedi recalled being 'terrified' shooting a song; Saroj Khan compared her to Sunny Deol

As a dedicated follower of Bollywood, I must confess that my heart aches for Mandira Bedi when I hear about her struggles during the making of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. While the film’s songs created a euphoria among fans and became an integral part of Indian weddings in the 90s, it seems that Mandira’s experience was far from the romantic charm portrayed on screen.

In the 90s, the soundtrack for the Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol movie Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was adored by fans and frequently used at Indian weddings. More recently, Mandira Bedia, a supporting actress in the film, disclosed that she had a challenging time during the shooting of one of the well-known songs with choreographer Saroj Khan, as her dance moves were compared unfavorably to Sunny Deol’s style by the choreographer.

During an interview on Kareena Kapoor’s talk show What Women Want, Mandira Bedi shared an unexpected difficulty she faced while filming the renowned song “Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna”. Despite considering it a privilege to collaborate with the renowned choreographer, she found it distressing due to her struggles in dance.

As an ardent fan, I can’t help but share my own sentiments that resonate deeply with the actress’s words. For me, if nightmares ever haunt me as a fully-grown individual, they revolve around two distinct realms – the art of choreographed dance and the dreaded math exams. Just like she, these two topics send shivers down my spine!

Mentioned earlier was a reminder of the renowned choreographer, who has collaborated with prominent figures such as Madhuri Dixit, Govinda, Salman Khan, among others in Bollywood, likening Bedi’s dance steps to those of Sunny Deol.

The actress reminisced, saying, “‘I can tell you this, you remind me of someone I’m familiar with, someone I know quite well. You’re similar to Sunny Deol. His mannerism is like your shoulder shake.’

Khan demonstrated to Mandira the importance of improved hip movements, which proved challenging for her and left her unable to grasp the technique correctly. This predicament made the entire encounter quite daunting for her.

In stark contrast to the carefree dancing enjoyed at parties, the actress from The Tashkent Files found it challenging to replicate Saroj Khan’s meticulous choreography. Nevertheless, her demanding backstage experiences did not go unnoticed, as her role in the successful film is still fondly remembered by fans today.

1995 saw the release of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, a groundbreaking debut for director Aditya Chopra. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Anupam Kher, Mandira Bedi, and others in crucial roles, this film garnered immense success, becoming the highest-grossing Indian movie of that year.
