As a die-hard fan of Kevin Costner‘s illustrious career, I can’t help but feel a tinge of sadness that he seems to be distancing himself from “Yellowstone”. His portrayal of John Dutton was nothing short of masterful and added a depth to the series that was truly unparalleled. It’s like watching Paul Newman drive a car without realizing you’re watching Paul Newman drive a car.
It appears that many people have shared their thoughts about the final episode of Yellowstone, but the question on everyone’s mind is what Kevin Costner thinks. However, we now have some insight… to an extent. The Academy Award-winning actor, who played family patriarch John Dutton for most of the series during its run, did not appear in the concluding episodes. Earlier this year, Costner announced his departure from the neo-Western series due to scheduling conflicts while working on his project, a four-part epic titled Horizon: An American Saga. There were also rumors of a disagreement between Costner and Yellowstone’s co-creator Taylor Sheridan.
Considering he was informed about leaving the show, and his past statements indicating he hadn’t watched the episode where his character meets his end, it’s understandable that Costner isn’t keen on following Yellowstone. In a video published by Daily Mail, when asked about the series finale, Costner expressed his thoughts.
“I’m not thinking about that. I don’t think I’ve given it any thoughts. We’ll just let it go.”
Costner opened up about his bond with Luke Grimes, who plays his son Kayce Dutton in Yellowstone. Recently, Grimes mentioned that filming Part 2 of Season 5 was surprisingly effortless and suggested that some tension was absent when Costner wasn’t around. When queried if he had spoken to Grimes, Costner revealed:
“We’re done talking.”
The Future of ‘Yellowstone’ is Murky
The final episode of “Yellowstone,” titled “Life is a Promise,” aired on December 15th. Despite receiving criticism from fans online, it attracted a large number of viewers, becoming the most-watched episode in the show’s history. The controversial finale saw Kayce selling the ranch to High Chief Thomas Rainwater and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) seeking revenge for her father’s death. With a “Yellowstone” spin-off already confirmed, fans won’t have to say goodbye to beloved characters Beth and Rip (Cole Hauser) just yet. At the moment, only Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Taylor Sheridan are linked to the project, but there is certainly potential for more “Yellowstone” cast members to join the untitled series.
Although some fans might still harbor feelings of anger towards Sheridan and how John’s story concluded, fans of “Yellowstone” will probably be eager for more scenes featuring Beth and Rip. The depth and ardor of their relationship, along with the popularity of these characters, guarantees a loyal viewer base that is likely to tune in and follow the development of their storyline further. Despite the fact that John’s death was devastating for many “Yellowstone” enthusiasts, it has been previously acknowledged that the Dutton patriarch was never meant to last throughout the entire series.
Originally, the plot required his character to leave for the storyline to intensify significantly, and that’s what the story was about – dealing with the loss of a family patriarch. The question then became whether the children could manage on their own. It seems John Dutton’s role was intended to end much sooner, but in a twist, he ended up being part of the series for longer than initially planned, according to Grimes.
Right now, you can stream the initial episode of Kevin Costner’s series titled “Horizon: An American Saga” on Max. In this production, Costner takes on multiple roles – director, co-writer, producer, and actor. On the other hand, his series “Yellowstone” is accessible for streaming on Peacock.
