As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for unconventional films, I must say that “Krampus” has become one of my favorite holiday movies to watch during this jolly time of year. With its unique blend of horror and comedy, it’s a breath of fresh air amidst the sea of traditional Christmas flicks.
During the holiday season, many people prefer traditional Christmas movies for their binge-watching. However, unconventional Christmas films have gained popularity as well, offering a refreshing change from the usual genre. Instead of sticking to classics like “Home Alone” or “Love Actually”, you can spice things up with movies like “Die Hard” and “Gremlins”. Unusual Christmas movies, such as horror films, have become quite popular. Movies like “Black Christmas” and “Silent Night, Deadly Night” are watched annually by fans. Since its release in 2015, the black comedy horror film “” has been added to this list and appears to be gaining more attention on streaming platforms as the holiday season approaches.
At the moment, “Krampus” stands at position six on Max’s list of Top 10 movies. In this list, it surpasses “Elf,” ranked seventh, and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” ranked eighth. This is quite an achievement for a lesser-known Christmas horror film compared to the more popular holiday classics. Fans of horror films have long recognized “Krampus” as a unique and fitting alternative for the holiday season since its debut in 2015, often praising it highly.
Under the guidance of director Michael Dougherty, who collaborated with Todd Casey and Zach Shields on the script, the movie Krampus revolves around a strife-ridden family. The constant squabbles within this family have sapped the Christmas joy from their youngest member, Max (Emjay Anthony). Unbeknownst to them, Max’s lack of holiday cheer unwittingly summons a monstrous, horned creature known as Krampus, a demonic figure from European folklore who metes out punishment to mischievous children on Christmas. The film boasts an impressive cast including Adam Scott, Toni Collette, David Koechner, Allison Tolman, Conchata Ferrell, Stefania LaVie Owen and Krista Stadler.
‘Krampus’ Was Well Received Upon Initial Release
The movie titled “Krampus” garnered favorable responses upon debut, scoring a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics generally agreed that it’s a bloody enjoyable watch for those who enjoy unconventional holiday horror movies with a penchant for B-movies in the vein of Joe Dante. However, some felt it could have been more ferocious to match its concept. At the time of its release, “Krampus” also earned nominations for Best Horror Film from both the Saturn Awards and the Empire Awards.
The movie, titled “Krampus,” turned out to be a blockbuster, earning $42.7 million within U.S. borders and an additional $61.5 million globally, all on a production budget of just $15 million. At the time, it stood out as a unique horror movie themed around Christmas, as the last one to be released was the 2006 remake of “Black Christmas.” Interestingly, Universal Pictures seemed hesitant or lacked confidence in its success, as they delayed critiques until just two days before its premiere.
If you’re not planning to stream the movie, Shout! Factory has just released an extended version of the film on a 4K Blu-ray combo pack that every movie fan should consider adding to their collection. This special edition comes with additional content such as commentaries and interviews, and it runs approximately four minutes longer than the original theater release.
