Red Carpet 2024: Hollywood’s Best-Dressed Stars of the Year

As a seasoned fashion aficionado who has spent countless hours poring over glossy magazines and runway footage, I must say that the L.A. Art + Film Gala’s red carpet was a breathtaking spectacle of style and creativity. The event brought together an eclectic array of stars, each donning their unique interpretation of elegance and sophistication.

2024, in my opinion, hasn’t been the most fashion-forward year, largely due to the revolving door of creative directors leaving some key positions vacant for extended periods. However, Hollywood has stood strong, with powerhouses like Louis Vuitton consistently welcoming stylish acting icons into their family. Meanwhile, Schiaparelli and Alaia are adding a distinctly European touch to the bustling boulevard, and Loewe is stealing the spotlight with its captivating ad campaigns featuring an impressive roster of talented actors. It’s no wonder everyone aspires to be seen in Loewe pieces.

I was thrilled when Michelle Obama donned my sleeveless suit at the Democratic National Convention in August, potentially making it the outfit of the year, styled by Meredith Koop. The impact of Method Dressing continues to be felt – with varying outcomes – ever since last year’s brilliant Barbie-themed red carpet looks led by Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal. This time around, Cynthia Erivo (in Marc Jacobs) started an eco-friendly wave that was widely applauded; Maya Rudolph (in Patou) effortlessly incorporated bohemian vibes into her character’s wardrobe for Loot; Zendaya (in Stéphane Rolland) played a love game with tennis balls and whites in Challengers, receiving mixed reviews; while Blake Lively missed the mark with her floral tributes to It Ends With Us. However, $350 million at the box office is always fashionable.

2023 was a year where the style game got a bit flashy, but it seems like we’ve found our groove again! It used to be all about the bold and bright, but now it’s more about the cool, casual vibe with fitted shirts, pastel hues, and an air of confidence. Across the pond, stars like Paul Mescal (in Gucci), Jonathan Bailey (in Giorgio Armani) and Andrew Scott (in Etro) are setting the trend. Over here in the U.S., Colman Domingo (in Boss) always looks dapper and classy, while Lenny Kravitz (in Saint Laurent) keeps things fresh with his signature twist on the latest fashion. It’s great to see men finally wearing clothes that complement them, not overshadow them. Kudos to Robert Downey Jr. (in Stella McCartney) for giving a shout-out to his stylist during his Oscar acceptance speech – he truly appreciates good style! Well done, Erica Cloud, for keeping us stylishly informed!

It’s a fact that impressive style isn’t exclusive to the young. While Taylor Russell, Ayo Edebiri, and Troye Sivan were making headlines in Alaïa, Loewe, and Prada respectively, seasoned veterans on the red carpet stole the show quietly. Meryl Streep dazzled in Valentino, Michelle Yeoh rocked Bottega Veneta with her new bangs, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu from “Emily in Paris” strutted in Schiaparelli, and Tilda Swinton at 64 (yes, that’s correct!) looked as cool and modern in Haider Ackermann’s collection for Jean Paul Gaultier Couture as any fashion novice could aspire to be.

The L.A. Academy Museum Gala is steadily gaining ground against its rival, the NYC Met Gala, by emphasizing elegance over exhibitionism. Notable attendees like Greta Lee (in a beautiful Loewe ensemble), Anna Sawai (impressive in Louis Vuitton) and Zoe Saldaña (radiant in Harris Reed) graced the event with their timeless beauty and viral-worthy looks, all without resorting to excessive theatrics or restrictive gowns that hindered their movement.

2024 ultimately proved victorious for individuals who prioritized both elegance and depth instead of glitz and superficiality, which I believe is a timeless principle to follow.
