The British “Ghosts” feels more subtly humorous, reflecting the British sense of dry wit and understatement, while the American version leans into broader, slapstick-style comedy.

In its 4th season, the delightfully quirky American reinterpretation of a ghost-themed sitcom on CBS, titled “Ghosts,” continues to thrive. The show revolves around Samantha (played by Rose McIver) and Jay Arondekar (Utkarsh Ambudkar), a New York couple who unexpectedly acquire and reside in a large country manor that just so happens to be inhabited by numerous friendly ghosts, all of whom met their demise on the premises. Following an encounter with death, Samantha gains the power to perceive and converse with these spirits. As a result, she and Jay soon adapt to cohabitating with the supernatural world, as Samantha serves as a liaison between the ghosts and the living.

Ghosts,” now in its fourth season, is a delightful series that has garnered praise from both critics and viewers due to its straightforward, charming, and heartwarming narratives, as well as its distinct characters. The writing team and talented actors like Rose McIver have put in considerable effort to differentiate this version from the U.K.’s “Ghosts.” The diverse cast of ghostly characters, such as Thorfinn the Viking (Devan Chandler Long), Sasappis (“Sass”) of the Lenape (Román Zaragoza), and Flower the hippie ghost (Sheila Carrasco), are key elements that contribute to the show’s unique appeal.

Season 1 of Ghosts

Starting on October 7, 2021, “Ghosts” Season 1 premiered with its first 18 episodes, following a similar plot as its UK version by introducing the main characters and their unexpected move into a grand country estate. During a dismal real estate appointment that left Sam (a writer) and Jay (a chef) pondering the hardships of New York City housing, they discovered that Sam had inherited a vast 19th-century manor in Hudson Valley. Eager to make it their new home, they promptly moved in, planning to turn it into a bed and breakfast. However, they soon realized that many spirits lived within its walls, much to their surprise and dismay.

When Sam suffers a near-fatal fall down the stairs, she finds herself with an extraordinary ability – she can now perceive and converse with spirits. At first, she thinks it’s all in her head, but eventually accepts that these apparitions are real. Determined to coexist harmoniously with these friendly phantoms within her own home, Sam occasionally goes the extra mile to improve their afterlife experience. In a unique turn of events, Nigel (played by John Hartman) and Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones), two ghosts from the Revolutionary era hailing from opposing sides of the conflict, develop a relationship (“Farnsby & B”). To make things even more intriguing, Sam introduces these spectral beings to contemporary technology, enabling them to explore the outside world through television and the internet. In exchange for this newfound knowledge, the ghosts abandon their efforts to disturb her bed and breakfast, allowing Sam and Jay to welcome guests (“Farnsby & B”).

Season 2 of Ghosts

Season 2 of “Ghosts,” with its 22 episodes that debuted on September 29, 2022, delves deep into the relationships of both the living and deceased residents of Woodstone Manor. Nigel and Isaac carry on their romance, while Sam launches a podcast aimed at identifying Alberta’s (Danielle Pinnock) murderer from the 1920s. A visit to the neighbors’ home reveals the spirit of Bjorn (Christian Jadah), Thorfinn’s son, and Sam helps them reconnect, communicating through their adjoining windows in an episode titled “The Baby Bjorn.

In this narrative, Sam and Jay bring on board Freddie (Mike Lane), a food delivery worker, to assist them around their place. However, he soon grows suspicious that the house is haunted and purchases a ghost trap from Latvia, leading to the trapping of Flower and Thorfinn temporarily. A love triangle unfolds between Thorfinn, Flower, and Pete (Richie Moriarty), but eventually, Flower chooses Thorfinn for a relationship. In contrast to its longer previous seasons, “Ghosts” Season 3, debuting on February 15, 2024, consists of merely ten episodes. The story begins with the inhabitants of Woodstone believing that Flower, who has mysteriously vanished, has been drawn into the afterlife. Overwhelmed by loss, Thor is convinced she has been reborn as an owl, persuading Sam to keep it captive in their home (episode titled “The Owl”). An unexpected event occurs at Sam and Jay’s Halloween party when Pete’s ex-wife Carol passes away, leading her spirit to become trapped on the grounds for eternity.

The British adaptation of “Ghosts” shares a very similar plotline with its American counterpart. Instead of Sam and Jay residing at Woodstone Mansion, the show focuses on Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) Cooper, who transition from a small city flat to Button House. Just as Woodstone is haunted by cholera spirits, Button House houses ghosts from the Black Death era.

In the show, many characters have similar counterparts. For instance, Thorfinn’s British equivalent is Robin (Laurence Rickard), a caveman character. Similarly to Hetty, Button House in the UK has a haughty matron named Lady Stephanie ‘Fanny’ Button (Martha Howe-Douglas). Instead of Trevor, the frat boy without pants, the UK version features Julian Fawcett MP (Simon Farnaby), a Tory politician who perished in the house amidst a sex scandal. Patrick “Pat” Butcher (Jim Howick), like Pete, is a scout leader and died with an arrow through his neck from one of his scouts. The cast also includes the innocent and guileless young Georgian woman Kitty (Lolly Adefope), the often tiresome Regency-era poet Thomas Thorne (Mathew Baynton), Mary (Katy Wix), a victim of Stuart-era witch trials, and a World War II officer named The Captain (Ben Willbond) who is closeted.

The five-season journey of this show started back in 2019 and wrapped up in December 2023. Similar to its U.S. counterpart, the storyline revolves around the Cooper family’s endeavor to renovate Button House into a bed and breakfast, all while juggling life in an old fixer-upper haunted by spirits. Although the humor remains consistent, the British version leans towards a more subtle and sometimes melancholic tone, causing debate among BBC “Ghosts” fans over the American adaptation.
