As a seasoned cinephile who has attended countless film festivals and screenings around the globe, I can confidently say that Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” stands out as one of the most unique and unforgettable cinematic experiences I have ever had. The live-action component during certain screenings, where an actor interacted with Adam Driver‘s character on the screen, was a truly revolutionary approach to breaking the fourth wall.
In an extraordinary fashion, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis offers a one-of-kind cinematic adventure. A captivating aspect of its initial showings was the inclusion of a live-action segment, where the theater lights would dim, only to brighten again during the movie, allowing an actor to engage in an impromptu conversation with Adam Driver’s character, Caesar Catalina, on the screen. This unconventional Q&A session was something I had the privilege of witnessing when I attended a screening last fall before its official release, and it was a memorable experience that even Adam Driver himself appreciated upon seeing the finished product.
In the video you see, I had an interview with Adam Driver during a promotional event for his movie ‘Megalopolis’ in Toronto back in September. Apart from discussing how he approaches his work and working with Francis Ford Coppola, we delved into the live-action component of the film. He revealed that this aspect was part of the presentation when the feature debuted at Cannes Film Festival over the summer. Interestingly, Driver mentioned that the initial plan was for this segment to be even more expansive, as he himself stated.
As a passionate cinephile, let me share my experience: Initially, I didn’t catch the film until its screening at Cannes. However, prior to that, I had viewed it numerous times because he graciously allowed me a sneak peek during the early stages of editing. Yet, it was not until the Cannes screening that I experienced the movie in its full glory, with all the perfect sound mix and other elements. I had sensed while filming that his vision for the project was grander. Over time, various factors led to a reduction in the scope of the film, including that particular scene, which seemed to fluctuate between inclusion and exclusion.
In a departure from the usual fourth-wall-breaking style audiences are accustomed to (such as Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool speaking directly to the audience), Adam Driver finds the unique scene in ‘Megalopolis’ to be a mirror of the director’s theater roots. Moreover, this moment offers insight into how Francis Ford Coppola operates off-screen, leaving Driver moved and somewhat overwhelmed, despite watching himself on the screen.
Experiencing Francis, a theater veteran and director, present his movie in such an immersive, experimental-theater-like manner at Cannes was a profoundly emotional moment for me. It was as if all the pieces of the film were falling into place perfectly, creating an atmosphere I hadn’t quite seen before. The lighting was exceptional, and I found myself deeply moved by it, even though I was part of the scene myself. In a way, it felt like appreciating your own joke, which made the experience all the more special.
It’s worth noting that the actor’s presence at screenings for the movie “Megalopolis” was a distinctive part of its theatrical debut. However, if you’re more interested in watching the film without an in-person Q&A session, it can currently be rented digitally.
