As a die-hard Power Rangers fan since the early ’90s, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about the latest developments in the franchise. After the disappointing turn of events in 2024, it was looking like the end for our favorite morphenomenal superheroes. But now, with rumors swirling about a new live-action movie and an animated TV show, I can’t help but feel hopeful.
2024 stood out as a pivotal year for the Power Rangers franchise for multiple reasons, though one particularly disappointing aspect was that, for the first time since 1993, no television show was produced – even considering the “reimagining” of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers broadcast in 2010 and labeled as Season 18. To add fuel to the fire, reports in June revealed that the Netflix reboot series for Power Rangers had been canceled. This unfortunate decision also dashed the broader shared universe plans that had been in development since 2020. As a devoted cinema enthusiast of the Power Rangers franchise, it was hard not to feel the sting of these developments.
Yet, it was noted back then that Hasbro Entertainment was considering a fresh creative path for the series. Now, more than six months later, not only has there been another rumor about how the franchise is poised for a grand comeback, but we might also have some insights into its potential new location after the Netflix project fell through.
What The Next Power Rangers Projects Are Rumored To Be
Based on reports from Daniel Richtman via ComicBookMovie, plans are underway to create a new live-action movie and an animated television series for the Power Rangers franchise. Further details about the projects haven’t been revealed yet, but according to Super-Jin, the upcoming movie will not be related to the ’90s reboot that Jonathan Entwistle had been working on for Netflix. It was also hinted that this new movie would have a theatrical release. Considering the 2017 Power Rangers movie’s lackluster reception both critically and commercially, those behind the next film are reportedly being careful about choosing the release date, possibly aiming for late 2026 before making an official announcement.
This film and TV series will undoubtedly resurrect these extraordinary superheroes into the limelight once more. I’m particularly eager for the latter since it marks the first animated adaptation within the Power Rangers franchise, and I believe it could fit perfectly with anime-inspired visuals. Regarding the movie, my primary wish is that it surpasses the success of the 2017 reboot, which faced similar aims to rejuvenate the brand but ultimately led to Saban selling the Power Rangers to Hasbro instead.
Where The Power Ranges Franchise Is Allegedly Being Set Up Next
So now that Netflix is no longer in the Power Rangers business, where would this movie and TV show be set up? Super-Jin also mentioned in his X post that Paramount and Skydance in final negotiations to obtain the Power Rangers media rights from Hasbro. Ryan Unicomb added in his confirmation of this information that it “sounds like it’s a full buyout of the IP from Hasbro, with Skydance keeping its standing percentage & Paramount becoming the main owner.”
If what’s stated is true, it implies that Paramount Pictures will be premiering this upcoming movie in cinemas, which I truly hope they follow through on instead of making it exclusively available for streaming. This thought leads me to discuss the Power Rangers TV show: if Paramount and Skydance acquire the rights to Power Rangers, it’s likely that this television series would be streamable with a Paramount+ subscription. I also hope that they make older shows accessible on this platform as well. As of now, most of these shows can be found on Tube, but newer titles like Power Rangers Dino Fury, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, and the 20th anniversary special Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Once & Always are still only available with a Netflix subscription.
You can be confident that we’ll share any official updates on the future of Power Rangers as soon as we receive them. If any of the speculations mentioned earlier prove accurate, I’m optimistic that the franchise will undergo a significant revival during the latter part of the 2020s.
