Is Pumbaa A Stoner? Listen, There’s Disney Canon, And Then There’s Seth Rogen Canon

As a seasoned moviegoer and self-proclaimed connoisseur of animated characters with a penchant for the green leaf, I must say that Pumbaa, the lovable warthog from The Lion King, has always been a character who’s actions piqued my curiosity. His laid-back attitude and propensity to be “confused and delighted by the things that life offers” certainly resonates with someone like me who shares similar traits (laughs).

Now, with Seth Rogen voicing Pumbaa in both The Lion King and Mufasa, I can’t help but wonder if there isn’t a bit of Pumbaa taking on Rogen’s postures. After all, it’s not unheard of for characters to adopt the personality traits of their voice actors, much like how Woody from Toy Story has become synonymous with Tom Hanks or the Genie from Aladdin with Robin Williams.

Is this a definitive proof that Pumbaa is a stoner? Perhaps not in Disney canon, but when Rogen himself admits that he sees “a little influence” on the character, I’m inclined to agree. This added dimension gives Pumbaa an extra layer of appeal for parents who are sitting through Mufasa with their kids, and every little bit helps, right?

In the end, whether or not Pumbaa is a stoner in Disney canon doesn’t really matter. What truly matters is that he continues to be a beloved character who brings joy to audiences of all ages. And if you catch Pumbaa taking a hit from a watermelon pipe while on screen, well, I won’t tell anyone (wink wink).

There are many animated characters we’ve often thought might be high. Iconic movie stoner characters such as Harold and Kumar, Jay and Silent Bob, and The Dude come to mind. However, let’s also consider cartoon characters who seem suspicious in their behavior. I can’t help but notice Shaggy from Scooby-Doo and Otto the school bus driver from The Simpsons. The former’s name is Shaggy, and the latter loves getting very intoxicated, aren’t they intriguing cases? But what about Pumbaa, the popular warthog from The Lion King? It’s worth discussing, don’t you think?

What can we say about Pumbaa? He struggles with excessive gas and has a habit of singing calming tunes like “Hakuna Matata.” These traits remind us of someone who deals with herbs. Since Seth Rogen, the voice actor for Pumbaa in both The Lion King and Mufasa (currently topping the box office), is well-versed in the world of cannabis, we thought it fitting to ask him if he believed Pumbaa shared his love for the green stuff. To our delight, Rogen openly acknowledged that he indeed suspected Pumbaa might be a fellow marijuana enthusiast.

I must admit, I’m not entirely sure about this. As far as Disney canon goes, it’s hard to say for certain. However, there does seem to be a hint of influence on his character. He appears quite bewildered and yet joyful about life’s surprises, which is something I can certainly relate to! (laughs)

It seems that sometimes, characters in movies or shows can adopt characteristics similar to the actors who portray them. For instance, Woody from Toy Story has become synonymous with a touch of disorderliness and nobility due to Tom Hanks’ voice being associated with him for many years. Similarly, it’s hard to separate Robin Williams from the Genie in Aladdin, as animators utilized his improvisations and the character’s delivery was infused with Williams’ signature, exaggerated humor.

It appears as though the new “live action” versions of The Lion King have given Pumbaa some characteristics reminiscent of Seth Rogen’s mannerisms. However, within Disney lore, this doesn’t imply that Pumbaa is a stoner. Similarly, Sleepy from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs likely does not consume alcohol, but he does seem to portray a laid-back demeanor that some might compare to being under the influence, especially while working in the diamond mine. In Rogen’s personal universe, though, Pumbaa could be seen as a stoner due to these similarities. It seems that Rogen is amused by and supportive of this interpretation, which may make the character more relatable for parents watching The Lion King with their children. A touch of humor like this can certainly make the movie-going experience more enjoyable.
