As a devoted fan of both “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Abbott Elementary,” I can hardly contain my excitement for their upcoming crossover episode, scheduled to air in early January on ABC. Growing up as a cable TV junkie, I never thought I’d see the day when the gang from Paddy’s Pub would grace the hallowed halls of a broadcast network, but here we are!
The prospect of these unruly reprobates wreaking havoc on the elementary school setting, with documentary cameras in tow, has me grinning ear to ear. I can just imagine Dennis asking the camera operators how they manage to capture footage from the characters’ bedrooms – a classic move if ever there was one!
The character interactions in the trailer and images released by ABC have me particularly intrigued. Mac’s sweet-eyed attempts at wooing Ava are already a highlight, even if she only gives him a deadpan stare in response. I can sense some serious chemistry brewing between these two! And who wouldn’t want to watch Frank argue endlessly with the school custodian, Mr. Johnson? Their shared eccentricities and magical realities make for an entertaining pairing that I hope will be fully explored.
Charlie, ever the dimwit, seems to be the most invested in the episode’s narrative, much to my delight. The stills released by ABC suggest he’ll be interacting with just about every member of the Abbott Elementary cast, including Chris Perfetti’s Jacob, Sheryl Lee Ralph’s Barbara, and Lisa Ann Walter’s Melissa. I can only hope that Charlie won’t disappoint us with his lackluster performance in the classroom – though if he does end up enrolling as a student, I suppose that would be fitting!
While Kaitlin Olson’s Sweet Dee doesn’t get much screen time in the trailer, her close proximity to Gregory has me intrigued. It’ll be interesting to see how she fares in double duty, with her other show “High Potential” also airing on ABC. And let’s not forget that Glenn Howerton spent a few seasons as a teacher himself, starring in the comedy “AP Bio.”
All in all, I can hardly wait for the gift of crossover excellence when “Abbott Elementary” welcomes “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s” stars on January 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET. Catch up on both shows with a Hulu subscription and prepare for a wild ride!
Oh, and as a final thought – I can only hope that the crossover will result in a new catchphrase for the ages: “What’s the worst that could happen? A classroom of children being terrorized by a bunch of degenerates from Philadelphia!” Now that would be something to look forward to!
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement about the upcoming TV event! Although we never got Steve Carrel’s proposed crossover between “The Office” and “It’s Always Sunny,” the next best thing is on its way in 2025. The Philly gang from “It’s Always Sunny” is set to cross paths with characters from “Abbott Elementary,” promising a clash of comedic worlds that I can hardly wait for! This electrifying episode will air on ABC early next year, and with the release of the first-look trailer, we now have a glimpse into the riotous fun that awaits us.
As a viewer who holds “Always Sunny” in high regard on TopMob’s list of Greatest Sitcoms and never skips “Abbott Elementary,” I joined many enthusiastic fans upon the crossover episode announcement, unaware of any details. However, now we’ve learned exciting tidbits about this special episode, named “Volunteers.” For instance, it appears that the District may be responsible (or innocent bystander) for assigning Mac, Dee, Dennis, Charlie, and Frank to the school, seemingly oblivious to the fact that these individuals should maintain a safe distance from children.
Watch the video at the bottom, and let’s celebrate some intriguing character combinations that appear not only in the video but also in the images ABC published.
I find it intriguing that some of cable television’s most notorious troublemakers are making their debut on broadcast TV at Abbott, seemingly ready to cause chaos. It’s even more interesting because they’ll be doing this in front of documentary cameras, which might lead to Dennis asking the camera crew awkward questions about how they manage to capture footage from the characters’ private bedrooms.

As a long-time fan of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, I am thrilled to see the new spinoff series, Finding Biggie and Cece. Having followed Rob McElhenney’s career since the early days, I have always appreciated his comedic timing and ability to bring humor to even the most mundane situations. With this new show, I am particularly excited about the character interactions, especially between Mac and Janelle James’ Ava.
From the trailer and stills released by ABC, it is clear that there will be a strong emphasis on their dynamic. The way McElhenney’s Mac gives his “sweetest-of-sweet-eyes” to Ava, even as she returns a deadpan stare, suggests a complex relationship full of potential for hilarious moments. And while it may seem that Ava is resistant to Mac’s advances, the fact that she will eventually smile during their interactions gives me hope that there are indeed “vibes” between them.
Having watched countless episodes of It’s Always Sunny, I have come to appreciate the show’s unique brand of humor and its ability to find laughter in unexpected places. With Finding Biggie and Cece, I am confident that McElhenney will continue to deliver on that promise. I can’t wait to see how their interactions unfold and what kind of shenanigans they will get up to together. Bring on the laughter!

Up next, I can’t help but envision myself being utterly captivated by extended scenes featuring Danny DeVito’s character, Frank, locked in a verbal dance with William Stanford Davis’ Mr. Johnson. Their initial exchanges seem destined to be contentious, as Frank playfully nicknames the school custodian “the sheriff of trash.” It strikes me that both characters might share an uncanny knack for connecting with magical realities, a talent that maintains their sanity and fuels their most peculiar idiosyncrasies.

Moreover, it appears that Charlie is expected to play a significant role in the storyline, even though his lines in the trailer may not have been particularly humorous. In contrast to his fellow cast members from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” Charlie Day seems to feature more prominently alongside the actors of “Abbott Elementary.” The episode will likely show Charlie’s dim-witted character interacting with many school staff members, including Chris Perfetti as Jacob, Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara, and Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa.
It seems from what we’ve observed that he appears to be baffled by the schoolwork for the elementary students. Therefore, it’s unlikely that he’ll make a strong impression unless, of course, he’s actually joining the class himself.
Kaitlin Olson’s character, Sweet Dee, doesn’t have much screen time that stands out, but I find her interactions with Gregory intriguing. Interestingly, Olson is juggling two roles – she’s also appearing in the returning half of Season 1 for ABC’s unconventional procedural dramedy, High Potential. Remarkably, both shows are being filmed very near to each other, with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which she’s filming for its upcoming Season 17.
Although Dennis, portrayed by Glenn Howerton, isn’t shown much, it’s important to remember that he’s the most monstrous and inappropriate member of the group. Additionally, let’s not forget that Howerton previously played a teacher for several seasons in the comedy series AP Bio.
Although it may not be a traditional Christmas gift, everyone can relish the shared brilliance of these shows when Abbott Elementary features the stars from It’s Always Sunny in an episode airing on Wednesday, January 8, at 8:00 p.m. ET. Fans can revisit all previous episodes of both sitcoms with a Hulu subscription.
