As a cinephile who has seen my fair share of films, I can confidently say that few movies have left me giggling uncontrollably like “Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar”. This hilarious comedy ranks fifth on my personal Top 10 of 2021, and it’s a film that continues to entertain with each viewing due to the abundance of jokes that can easily be missed amidst fits of laughter.
I wholeheartedly join the chorus of fans who wish for a sequel featuring our beloved characters. However, I must admit, the chances seem as slim as finding a unicorn in my backyard (which, let’s be honest, is not entirely impossible, but highly improbable). Star Jamie Dornan has expressed his interest in a follow-up, but alas, he isn’t overly optimistic.
In an interview with Collider, Dornan mentioned that if we really want to see more of Barb and Star, we should start a petition (which I’m considering right now as I type this). If we can rally enough support, who knows? Maybe, just maybe, we could witness the return of our favorite rhyming duo in “Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar: The Unfortunate Sequel”.
Unfortunately, the release of “Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar” was not what the creators had envisioned. Originally slated for a summer 2020 theatrical release, the pandemic forced a shift to premium video-on-demand. If only we could go back in time and give this delightful film the big screen debut it deserved!
In conclusion, let’s keep our fingers crossed (and start that petition) for a sequel. Until then, I’ll be streaming “Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar” on Hulu, sharing it with friends, and hoping against hope that the magic of Barb and Star will continue to shine!
Oh, and remember, laughter is the best medicine… unless you’re a henchman who wants to take over the world, then it might not be so helpful. (Wink wink, Edgar Pagét!)
Among the movies released in recent years, very few have made me laugh as much as “Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar”. Ranking fifth on my personal list of favorites from 2021, this comedy is a joyous celebration of absurdity with no bounds. The humor is so infectious that it’s easy to miss jokes while you’re rolling in laughter during multiple viewings. I think many fans would be thrilled if we were to get a sequel featuring the main characters, but it seems that the chances for one might be slim due to Jamie Dornan’s previous comments about the possibility of such a project.
In contrast to his serious portrayal of Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades trilogy, Dornan exhibits a comedic, passionate side as Edgar Pagét, the henchman for villainess Sharon Fisherman in Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar. This character eventually transforms into a hero under the influence of the title characters. In this role, Dornan is genuinely funny and has expressed interest in collaborating with writers Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo on a potential sequel, but he remains uncertain if it will ever come to fruition. He shared this sentiment during an interview with Collider in spring 2024.
If you’re open to the idea, consider starting an online petition to generate some buzz and collect signatures. I’ve had a few chats with Kristen [Wiig] and Annie [Mumolo] about the possibility of creating more content, but unfortunately, the timing with the release of that hasn’t been ideal due to COVID-19. However, it has found a wonderful audience who truly appreciate it.
According to Jamie Dornan, the 2021 release of “Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mar” didn’t match the initial plans when the film was in development. Lionsgate originally intended to launch this comedy with a summer 2020 theatrical release… However, due to the global shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie had to be postponed. Like many other high-profile titles during that period, it didn’t receive a widespread cinema premiere, instead opting for a premium video-on-demand distribution.
Jamie Dornan regrets that the movie “Barb And Star Go To Vista Del Mara” didn’t receive as much attention as it should have, and he believes that if the pandemic hadn’t occurred, discussions about a possible sequel would be quite different. He added…
Due to its unexpected release method, poor timing, and the cinemas being closed, the film wasn’t well-received as intended. I believe a wider audience should have experienced it, and if they had, discussions on further projects might have been simpler since there would be more opportunities for exploration.
In today’s media landscape, it’s not unimaginable that the film “Barb And Star” might experience a surge in popularity similar to the craze for “Suits” when it began streaming on Netflix. Such an occurrence could revive conversations about a potential sequel. For now, we can only appreciate the charm of this unique movie and spread the word to others who will cherish it (and I should mention that it’s currently streamable with a Hulu subscription).
