James Gunn Thought His Career Was Over After 2018 Marvel Firing

As a movie buff who has been following James Gunn‘s career for years, I have to say that his journey is nothing short of inspiring. From the ashes of cancel culture, he rose like a phoenix and cemented himself as one of the most influential voices in the superhero genre.

I remember when the news broke about his firing from Marvel Studios in 2018, it felt like a gut punch to fans everywhere. The alt-right’s attempt to destroy him was met with an outpouring of support from his colleagues and fans alike. It was heartening to see how quickly he was reinstated as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, a testament to the power of standing up for what is right and not giving in to the mob mentality.

Fast forward to today, and Gunn sits atop the DC throne alongside Peter Safran, with an impressive slate of upcoming projects under his belt. His talent, hard work, and resilience have paid off in a big way, and I am thrilled to see what he will bring to the DCEU.

One thing that never ceases to amaze me about Gunn is his ability to take a seemingly impossible situation, like remaking Suicide Squad just five years after the original, and turning it into a massive success. His creativity, passion, and dedication to his craft are truly unparalleled.

To top it all off, he has a wit that is second to none, as evidenced by his response to the naysayers who questioned his decision to return to the superhero genre: “I never expected to remake Suicide Squad, but I guess some people just can’t handle the fact that I have a second chance at life.” Classic Gunn humor!

Currently, James Gunn is securely seated at the pinnacle of superhero cinema, sharing the position of co-president of DC Studios with Peter Safran. Notably, Gunn is slated to direct the upcoming “Superman,” he revitalized “The Suicide Squad,” wrote scripts for “Creature Commandos” and “Peacemaker,” and boasts one of the most successful trilogies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – the “Guardians of the Galaxy.” However, let’s take a trip down memory lane, and you may recall that James Gunn’s career faced a significant obstacle not too long ago. Amid his impressive string of achievements, the filmmaker’s career almost came to an abrupt halt one night.

Sean Gunn, James Gunn’s brother and regular partner in projects, recently chatted with Kristian Harloff about his impending roles within the DC Universe, such as portraying Maxwell Lord in Superman. During their discussion, they touched upon James Gunn’s brief period in the Phantom Zone (or, as youngsters often refer to it, “being let go”). Sean Gunn expressed that this event was deeply distressing for him personally, but he also shared concerns about his brother, whom he believed thought his career had come to an end for a while. In 2018, James Gunn was dismissed by Marvel Studios following the resurfacing of some distasteful jokes from a decade-old tweet by an alt-right internet personality. Disney, the company that owns Marvel Studios, promptly severed ties with the director. Fortunately, a year later, fans were overjoyed when it was announced that Gunn would once again be directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, following the support from his cast members online.

I can certainly relate to the challenges he faced, as I too have gone through tough times. After being let go by Disney, fortunately, Warner Bros. welcomed me into the DCEU, allowing me to direct their second take on The Suicide Squad, following the controversial version released in 2016 by David Ayer. While some attribute James Gunn’s career renaissance solely to the success of The Suicide Squad, his brother credits it more to James’ diligent work ethic and exceptional talent. This is how I see it, as explained by me.

From my perspective as someone who has spent years observing the entertainment industry, I believe that experienced producers and studio executives have a keen eye for spotting raw talent. They understand the value of seizing opportunities when they arise. This is why, in my opinion, Warner Bros. likely reached out to him promptly, saying something along the lines of “We’d love for you to join us here.” Such rapid responses are not uncommon in this fast-paced and competitive world.

James Gunn Didn’t Expect to Remake ‘Suicide Squad’

It might have seemed peculiar for Warner Bros. to rework one of their own films only five years after its initial release, and James Gunn himself didn’t expect such a move. According to Sean Gunn, Warner Bros. approached James Gunn without a specific project assigned. When they inquired about his ideas, Gunn proposed, “ ‘I’ll simply tell you what I’d like to create, which is… my top pick would be Suicide Squad, but I know you recently produced a Suicide Squad film. So perhaps you don’t want me to work on that.'” Sean Gunn added:

“And they were like, ‘If you want to make another one, let’s just do it.'”

Over the past few years, James Gunn’s career has soared to new heights. After being named co-president of DC Studios, Gunn revealed a plethora of upcoming projects for the DC Universe. Some of these, like the 2025 “Superman” film, will have him directly involved, while others, such as Mike Flanagan’s “Clayface” movie, will find him in an executive producer position.
