As a dedicated follower of Bollywood and a student of human relationships, I find the story of Govinda and Sunita Ahuja‘s journey fascinating. Their tale is not just about the glamour and glitz of Bollywood, but also about the trials, tribulations, and transformations that their relationship has undergone over the years.
Sunita’s recollection of her first meeting with her mother-in-law, dressed in a haphazardly wrapped saree, brings a sense of nostalgia and vulnerability. It’s intriguing to see how young love can sometimes be blinded by the societal norms and expectations, as was evident in Sunita’s case when she wore a boy cut hairstyle and short skirts, much to Govinda’s disapproval.
Their initial disagreements and misunderstandings are relatable to many of us who have gone through the tumultuous journey of finding our place in a relationship. However, what’s heartening is Sunita’s admission that her love for Govinda eventually bloomed despite their differences, proving that even backwardness can be overcome with time and understanding.
What I find particularly endearing about their story is the bond they share with each other and with Govinda’s mother. The fact that they never fought like typical ‘saas-bahu’ and shared a common zodiac sign, added an extra layer of harmony to their relationship. It just goes to show that love can indeed conquer all, even if it starts off in a tangled saree!
On a lighter note, I can’t help but imagine Govinda’s reaction when he first met Sunita with her boy cut hairstyle and short skirts – perhaps something like, “Arre yeh toh ladka hai, yeh hai…,” as Sunita so eloquently put it. But thankfully, love prevailed and they lived happily ever after!
Back in the year 1987, I, a starstruck admirer (or should I say, future wife), tied the knot with none other than the legendary Bollywood actor, Govinda. Fast forward to today, my dear memories of our past have been stirred up once more, as his latest reminiscence took me back to our early days together.
You see, I remember vividly my first encounter with my mother-in-law, all dressed in a traditional saree, trying to make a lasting impression. However, little did I know that our fashion choices would become a bone of contention between us and Govinda. To my surprise, he wasn’t too fond of me donning short skirts, and we even had our fair share of disagreements over the matter. In his words, he was quite ‘backward’ in those days. But that’s just a part of the story, as I look back now, I can see how our differences helped us grow stronger together.
During a recent chat with Hindi Rush from TopMob, Sunita Ahuja shared an anecdote about her initial struggles with wearing a saree during her first encounter with her future mother-in-law. At the tender age of 16, she admitted to being unfamiliar with the traditional Indian attire and its wrapping techniques.
When asked about who she sought assistance from, Sunita responded, “I simply looked at mom while she was dressing up haphazardly, wondering what one has to do in love. My affection was blind back then… not anymore (laughs). I went to meet my mother-in-law wearing the same disheveled attire. However, she showed me a lot of love.
Sunita shared that Govinda expressed disapproval of her clothing style, as she often wore shorts and short skirts. She also mentioned that when they first met, Govinda had commented on her boy cut hairstyle, which caused disagreements between them in the past. (She said, “He didn’t like that I only wore shorts and short skirts, and even my hair was boy cut when I met him. So he told me, ‘This is a boy…,’ we used to argue a lot earlier.”)
Sunita went on to explain, “I never took a liking to him because he was incredibly backward. However, as time passed and we continued to argue and fight, it somehow slipped by me that I had fallen in love with him.

In the very same conversation, Sunita Ahuja shared insights into her connection with Govinda’s mom. She explained that it was primarily due to his mother-in-law that their relationship blossomed, and she emphasized that unlike many traditional ‘mother-daughter-in-law’ pairs, they never engaged in typical squabbles.
Sunita mentioned, “My mom was fond of me, and I still express the same sentiment today. I’ve always said that I married Govinda because it was my mother-in-law who made it happen. We have never had arguments or disagreements like those typically found between mothers-and-daughters-in-law; we have never argued with each other.
Sunita explained that because they share the same zodiac sign, her mother-in-law’s birthday being on the 7th of June and hers on the 15th, they had a strong connection with one another.
