Is This New (and Already Beloved) Couple in ‘Outlander’ Endgame?

The primary reason for the popularity of the Starz historical fantasy series Outlander lies largely in the compelling portrayal of the relationship between its lead characters, Jamie and Claire, as well as the other characters who are all intricately linked to them. Each character adds an exciting element to the storyline, but one particular character is receiving more focus in Outlander Season 7, and we can’t help but be thrilled by it.

In simpler terms, William Ransom, who grew up under Lord John’s care but was biologically Jamie’s son, wasn’t the lad we saw playfully interacting with Jamie when he worked as a groom for the Dunsany family at Helwater. They crossed paths on multiple occasions, but when William discovered the truth about his parentage, it significantly altered his life. Despite facing hardships, he found companionship, yet we wonder if this relationship in ‘Outlander‘ ultimately leads to a happy ending.

How Did William and Jane Meet in ‘Outlander’?

William’s life has not been smooth sailing; it’s clear as day. This is due to the fact that he discovered Jamie was his father, a revelation that left him grappling with the truth. Uncertain about who he really was, he began questioning everything around him. In the TV series Outlander, when William received this shocking news, he ended up in a brothel after getting into some trouble. It was there that he encountered Captain Harkness, a man known for his rudeness and potentially dangerous behavior, who was attempting to force one of the workers, Jane, to comply with him.

In the heat of the moment, my protective instincts took over, leading me to cover the costs for Jane and escort her to a private space. Though she expressed her intention to reciprocate, it was clear that William had no desire for such an exchange. Instead, he suggested they retire for some rest, and as we did so, a deep bond began to form between us – one that eventually allowed me to open up about my feelings, with Jane there to listen and provide comfort.

Beyond the highly debated episode in Outlander, the series contains several episodes that seem excessively unrelated to some fans, yet serve a purpose in organically progressing character development. The 14th episode of Outlander falls under this category, dedicating significant screen time to advance William’s storyline. William and Jane, despite their occasional heated disagreements, complement each other well in terms of personality, much like Jamie and Claire do.

What Did Jane Do in ‘Outlander’?

After parting ways, it was necessary for William to go back due to his soldierly obligations (being greatly influenced by stern Lord John) when unexpectedly, Jane and her young sister arrived at the military campsite. Here, Jane confided in William that Captain Harkness had resurfaced and offered twice the usual amount of money to take away Jane’s sister to a private room. Accompanying them, Jane tried to rescue Franny and herself by fatally attacking the man. With no other choice but to escape instantly, they opted to ask for William’s aid as their next step.

Frankly speaking, William and Jane’s relationship didn’t get off on the right foot, and there are indeed some disagreements and tension between them. Nevertheless, it’s difficult not to acknowledge the strong chemistry they share, leaving viewers eager for more scenes featuring these captivating Outlander characters. Given this, it is also logical that William felt compelled to assist them without delay, yet his strategies didn’t unfold as he had hoped.

In a startling turn of events reminiscent of “Outlander” Season 7, a friend of the late Captain Harkness identifies Jane and her young sister, recalling the tragic night when Harkness was murdered. He swiftly apprehends Jane, forcibly taking her away from her sibling. Overwhelmed by the situation, Franny sought out William, urgently sharing the distressing details. Upon learning of the grim news, he hastily departed, demonstrating a chivalrous resolve that echoes the Fraser lineage undeniably.

It’s no wonder that the young girl immediately felt anxious when she learned that her elder sister and only guardian might face hanging due to her actions, regardless of them being rooted in self-preservation. Although it remains uncertain what will happen to Jane in the beloved Outlander series after episode 15 left viewers yearning for William to rescue her, the Diana Gabaldon novel series provides additional insight on this matter.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t read the Outlander novels

What Happens to Jane and William in the ‘Outlander’ Books?

In essence, the narrative of William and Jane’s storyline remains quite similar across the books and the popular TV series. After a tragic event involving Captain Harkness, Jane and her sister turned to William for aid. Unfortunately, Jane was apprehended, and here comes the spoiler: despite William’s attempts to help, he was powerless to prevent her from being hanged for the crime. Consequently, their budding relationship came to an abrupt end before it truly began.

Regrettably, it seems their fate in the series might not include them as the endgame couple, but let’s cross our fingers that “Outlander” could deviate from this path. Perhaps, against all odds, William may miraculously save Jane from a fatal outcome, allowing them to spend their days in blissful harmony in “Outlander” Season 8. Here’s hoping for some well-deserved happiness for William after his recent hardships and the surprising support he’s found in Jane. “Outlander” airs every week on Starz.
