At the 2025 Golden Globes, Wicked might not have dominated the main award categories, yet it remained a frequent topic for jokes and memorable moments throughout the event on Sunday night.
Under the direction of Jon M. Chu, the blockbuster movie earned nighttime recognition with four nominations, one of which was for Best Picture in the Musical or Comedy category. Notably, Cynthia Erivo, portraying Elphaba, and Ariana Grande, who took on the role of Galinda/Glinda, received individual nominations as Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively.

In the film adaptation of “Wicked,” penned by Winnie Holzman (who also wrote the script for the original stage musical) and Dana Fox, we delve into an unheard tale about the witches residing in Oz. The renowned composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, who won an Academy Award, adapted the stage musical to fit the screenplay.
The movie “Wicked,” inspired by the 2003 stage musical of the same name, reveals a previously untold tale of the witches in Oz. Winnie Holzman, the play’s scriptwriter, collaborated with Dana Fox to write the screenplay for Chu’s film. Stephen Schwartz, an Academy Award-winning composer and lyricist, adapted the musical for the silver screen.
Below, The Hollywood Reporter rounds up some of the Wicked moments from the Globes.
Box Office Achievement
Stepping into the gaming world here, let me rephrase that:
As a gamer, I’d say after scoring a massive nomination for both cinematic and box-office success – with Wicked setting a new record by earning approximately $114 million in its domestic opening weekend as the highest-grossing musical adaptation ever – the Universal film ultimately bagged the trophy in that category.
Upon receiving the award, Chu commended the audience members who watched the movie, stating that they played a crucial role in highlighting how art serves as a powerful expression of “an optimistic rebellion.
Even in this era when negativity seems to dominate, creating art that embodies optimism can be a revolutionary act. This is about empowerment, happiness, and finding hope. If we uncover that the world might not be as we initially perceived it, then perhaps there’s a bit of Elphaba within us – the courage and resilience to persevere instead of giving up, to step off the beaten path, and maybe even find the ability to soar.
“Holding Space”
In her introductory speech, the host Nikki Glaser brought up the popular “holding space” interview from Wicked, as she pondered over the latest election outcomes.
As a devoted admirer, let me clarify that I’m not here to criticize or judge. Frankly, it’s beyond my capabilities given your immense fame, extraordinary talent, and formidable influence. If there was ever a time when you could dictate the nation’s voting choices, surely this isn’t it. But fear not, your impact will undoubtedly be felt in future endeavors!
Later on, Glaser playfully said to Grande, “I’m nervous. Ariana, can you take my hand?” Instead of doing so, the celebrity humorously grasped Erivo’s nail during their viral conversation. Meanwhile, Grande mimed and signaled to Erivo, implying she had her hand held.
Or:
In a joking manner, Glaser asked Grande, “I’m scared, Ariana, can you keep my finger safe?” However, in the spirit of fun, Grande playfully took hold of Erivo’s nail during their viral chat. Additionally, Grande pretended to have Erivo’s hand held by miming and gesturing.
Nikki Glaser: “Everyone Loved Wicked”
Due to Chu’s Wicked raking in a staggering $644 million at the box office worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation ever, surpassing Mamma Mia!, Glaser humorously commented on the movie’s immense popularity.
She admitted that she wasn’t very familiar with the musical ‘Wicked’ this year because her high school friends adored it. In fact, she, herself, was a fan of ‘Wicked’, and so were her boyfriend and his boyfriend.
She additionally brought up the film in her criticism of _Joker 2_. “In _Wicked_, some viewers criticized that the movie was spoiled by characters singing. Similarly, in _Joker 2_, some viewers complained that the movie was ruined by the visuals on screen and the sounds they heard. I’m sorry, _Joker 2_. It seems their opinions aren’t present here,” she remarked.
“Pope-ular”
In a playful jab at Ariana Grande’s rendition of “Popular” in Wicked, Glaser decided to put together her own take on the song, blending elements from it with the highly-acclaimed production Conclave, featuring Ralph Fiennes.
“You’re going to be quite popular. I’ll show you some Catholic prayers…”, sang Glaser, momentarily pausing while appearing to receive a message through her earpiece. “This entire situation is awful? I’m making a fool of myself in front of Elton John?”, said Glaser, eliciting laughter from the audience.
Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh Address Internet Talk
During the presentation of the best song award, Goldblum and Yeoh from “Wicked” chose to address a few points clarification.
Or, more colloquially:
At the best song award show, Goldblum and Yeoh from Wicked decided it was time to set the record straight on a couple of things.
Yeoh mentioned that they became aware of comments and discussions about them online, ever since their ‘Wicked’ film was released.
“Yeah people, for instance, have been calling me ‘zaddy,’” Goldblum said.
Yeoh remarked, as the camera focused on Erivo and Grande, ‘People have been referring to me as a ‘mother figure’ and ‘knock it out of the park’?'”
“Yeoh commented, with Erivo and Grande nodding in agreement, ‘People call me a ‘nurturing figure’ and ‘put on an impressive show’?’
“Come on, I would never slay anyone’s house down,” Yeoh added.
At the Golden Globes, the exceptionally skilled Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Yeoh pass the trophy to the victor of the Best Song category in a film – what an impressive performance! Bravo!
