Hiroyuki Sanada Gives Inspiring Speech After Golden Globe for ‘Shogun’ Best Actor Win

2025’s award season has commenced, with the Golden Globes honoring exceptional TV and film productions at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California last night. FX’s ‘Shogun’ shone brightly, claiming the title for Best Drama Series. Notably, this historical epic also bagged three awards for its stellar cast members, including Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, and standout performer Hiroyuki Sanada.

Hiroyuki Sanada was honored with the Golden Globe for his exceptional portrayal as Lord Toranaga in the series “Shogun.” In an unexpected twist, audiences initially anticipate Cosmo Jarvis’ character John Blackthorne to be the main focus, but it’s the captivating and masterful performance of Sanada as Toranaga that truly captivates. Towards the end of 2024, Sanada won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the Primetime Emmys, and he has also been nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Series at this year’s Critics’ Choice Awards, scheduled for January 12.

“During his acceptance speech, Hiroyuki Sanada expressed gratitude towards the Golden Globes for acknowledging his exceptional performance alongside other distinguished nominees in the category. He stated, ‘Thank you, Golden Globes, for this recognition. I’m thrilled to be among these amazing nominees,’ Sanada expressed. Following thanks to FX, Hulu, and Disney, Hiroyuki Sanada concluded his speech with an encouraging message for aspiring artists and content creators: “I say this to all young performers and makers: Keep dreaming big and working hard,” he said.

To all budding actors and innovators out there: Embrace who you are. Trust your abilities. Never lose heart. Wishing you success. Thanks!

Hiroyuki Sanada Didn’t Know ‘Shogun’ Would Work

In the year 2024, prior to “The Penguin” taking over pop culture, the highly successful series “Shogun” held sway. Based on James Clavell’s novel, “Shogun” tells the tale of John Blackthorne, a pirate and navigator, who is manipulated by Japanese lords after his shipwreck in Japan. In FX’s adaptation, while Blackthorne’s main storyline remained, it gave greater focus to the Japanese characters, such as Toranaga and Toda Mariko, portrayed by Anna Sawai.

Following the receipt of his award, Hiroyuki Sanada was guided towards the press area for an interview with the Golden Globes’ official reporter. During this conversation, he admitted that he never thought something like the TV series Shogun would come to fruition, let alone be so widely acclaimed. “We never thought such events could occur when we were filming a few years ago,” the actor shared. “It was a bit of a gamble – 70% Japanese dialogue with subtitles. Would audiences appreciate it or not? However, after releasing the initial two episodes, we received overwhelmingly positive responses from both viewers and critics.

Hiroyuki Sanada is gearing up to put on his samurai armor once more since FX has renewed the series “Shogun” for two additional seasons. The upcoming seasons will surpass Clavell’s novel, unfolding an original narrative featuring the surviving characters, including Sanada’s Lord Toranaga. An official release date for “Shogun” Season 2 remains undisclosed at this time.
