In the ’90s, Indra Kumar stood out as one of the most prosperous directors in the film industry, collaborating with prominent stars such as Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, and Aamir Khan. Reminiscing about his 1995 blockbuster Raja recently, he shared an unexpected incident: a scene in which Sanjay Kapoor slapped Madhuri Dixit elicited thunderous applause from the audience. Surprisingly, people who had previously criticized Sanjay for this act ended up clapping along with everyone else.
Indra Kumar recently revealed to Siddharth Kannan that Sanjay Kapoor, who first appeared in the movie Prem, faced flops at the box office mere weeks before Raja, his next film, hit theaters. This led many to question whether Kumar’s own movie would also struggle financially, even Kapoor himself had doubts.
In simpler terms, Indra Kumar expressed, “I faced mockery from others and even lost faith in myself. Deep down, I contemplated, ‘This will be my final movie.’ From then on, I thought about going to Haridwar.
However, the movie ended up being an extraordinary triumph. Kumar attributed this success to Madhuri Dixit, choreographer Saroj Khan, and the film’s writers for reviving the project. He shared that he had watched the film at Mumbai’s Novelty theatre a while ago, and it was unexpected as the same individual who had criticized Kapoor in his previous release just a few weeks prior was now applauding him.
In that particular scene, he mentioned that Madhuri’s character accused Sanjay’s screen brother of inappropriate behavior. However, rather than supporting her claim, the actor struck her, choosing to stand by his on-screen sibling instead.
In the Novelty theater, as I watched the movie, those same individuals who had been mocking Sanjay Kapoor for his past film were actually applauding him when he slapped Madhuri Dixit on screen,” shared Kumar, who experienced the impact of the script firsthand.
On June 2, 1995, the movie titled “Raja” premiered. It showcased a talented group of actors such as Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Mukesh Khanna, Dalip Tahil, Rita Bhaduri, and Himani Shivpuri in significant roles.
