This week has been fantastic for video game enthusiasts, as various PlayStation classics have recently been transformed into both live-action and animated adaptations. However, the excitement doesn’t end there! Alongside Season 2 of “The Last of Us,” the “Ghost of Tsushima” anime, and the live-action “Helldivers” film, one of PlayStation’s most cherished new sci-fi series is set to make its big-screen debut. It has been announced that Horizon Zero Dawn will indeed get a live-action movie.
The new Horizon Zero Dawn movie project was announced by Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Products, at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada (as reported by IGN). This will be the second collaboration between PlayStation Studios and Columbia Pictures, following the success of the 2022 film Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. On stage during PlayStation Studios’ presentation, Qizilbash stated: “Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions are currently in the early stages of creating a movie based on the award-winning Horizon Zero Dawn.

Launched in 2017, “Horizon Zero Dawn” takes place in a post-apocalyptic landscape teeming with robotic creatures resembling animals. The protagonist is Aloy, a hunter on a quest to discover her origins and understand how the world as we knew it came to an end. The initial release, created by Guerrilla Games, was incredibly successful, selling more than 2.6 million copies in its first fortnight. In 2022, a sequel titled “Horizon Forbidden West” was unveiled, earning the same level of praise. Asad Qizilbash shared no further details about the project.
The ‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ TV Series Is Officially Dead
In the past, studios have attempted to bring the expansive sci-fi universe of “Horizon Zero Dawn” into live-action, with Netflix announcing in 2022 that they were developing a TV show. The series was to be headed by Steve Blackman, who had previously worked on “The Umbrella Academy”. Unfortunately, earlier this year it was revealed that the project would not proceed, partly due to concerns regarding Blackman’s alleged creation of a hostile work environment on the set of “The Umbrella Academy”.
For many Horizon Zero Dawn enthusiasts, the live-action movie has long been anticipated since the initial game launch in 2017. Given that a film announcement coincided with the game’s release might have raised eyebrows back then. However, the video game adaptation scene has significantly evolved over the past few years, with hits like The Last of Us and Fallout, as well as successful franchises such as Sonic the Hedgehog, reshaping expectations. Consequently, fans are cautiously optimistic about the movie. The primary hurdle lies in casting – fans have been speculating potential Aloy actors for years now, and video game enthusiasts are known for their strong opinions and quick temper when adaptations veer off course.
The Horizon Zero Dawn movie hasn’t been given an official release date, yet.
