How Does the Death Penalty Work?
During the campaign, death doesn’t cause much disruption.
Upon your demise, adversaries within your present game area will be re-initialized, and you’ll reappear at the nearest respawn point, with no modifications to the map layout.
In simpler terms, this implies that you won’t need to restart the entire region, but keep in mind that any loot left behind by enemies will be lost.
In case you perish right after vanquishing a boss, any rewards dropped afterward typically cannot be retrieved or recovered.
In this game, the mechanic alerts players about their current environment and crucial timing, particularly when important rewards like treasures or mission objects are at stake.
In case you encounter a tough level or battle where defeating an enemy grants a lasting bonus (such as Spiritbloom), passing away at an inopportune moment necessitates starting the entire confrontation over again, thereby forfeiting any potential benefits that come with success.
On the other hand, in Hardcore mode, death leads to much harsher outcomes.
One death is enough to switch you from Hardcore to the Standard realm permanently.
The tension in Hardcore mode raises the stakes, keeping players on their toes while they play.
The death penalty gets more intense once you finish the campaign and dive into the endgame.
As you explore the Atlas system, dying can set you back, especially regarding your XP.
Each time you die during this phase, you lose 10% of the XP required to level up.
It becomes a bigger deal as you progress through the Atlas and your XP bar fills up.
It can be discouraging to fall short by 10% of the required XP for the next level, adding to the amount you’ve already earned, when you are almost about to reach that level.
When you die in the endgame, you also lose the Waystone you used to enter the map.
1. If you die on the map, all your progress will be lost, and you’ll have to start over by using a new Waystone.
2. In case of death, you’ll lose all your progress on the map and require a fresh Waystone to try again.
3. When you pass away in the game, your advancement is erased, and you’ll need another Waystone for a new attempt.
4. Death means losing everything you’ve achieved on the map, necessitating a new Waystone to restart.
5. In the event of your demise, you’ll have to return to square one on the map using a fresh Waystone.
6. If you die, it’s back to the beginning for you on the map, and you’ll need another Waystone to give it another go.
If you continue experiencing failures, there’s a chance that the map could become inoperable, preventing you from accessing it via the Atlas in future.
To accumulate more Waystones, you have two options:
1. Farm them on lower-level maps.
2. Exchange them with other players, but keep in mind that they will become increasingly scarce and valuable as you advance.
For certain gamers, particularly those tackling advanced game levels, dropping a map and its rewards might seem equivalent to forfeiting a significant amount of in-game money, such as Exalted Orbs.
The stakes go through the roof when you’re dealing with endgame bosses.
To engage in the Citadel battle, you first must overcome the lesser bosses strategically placed throughout the Atlas.
In case you meet your demise during these battles, any bosses you’ve previously conquered will disappear, forcing you to confront and defeat them once more.
Restarting sets back your advancement significantly, and it’s quite irritating, particularly when you’re aiming to defeat several bosses consecutively.

But the community’s been split on the death penalty system in PoE 2.
Some players believe that the penalty system plays a crucial role in adding difficulty to the game, particularly during advanced levels, as the maps grow increasingly complex and the bosses become progressively harder.
