In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the fourth installment of Spider-Man is undergoing a significant transformation, leaving fans in anticipation for Tom Holland’s reappearance as Peter Parker on the silver screen. One of the major curiosities among fans is: Who might be the movie’s antagonist(s)?
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at how each Spider-Man film has raised the bar higher than the last. Spider-Man: Homecoming marked the entrance of Michael Keaton as The Vulture, undeniably one of the MCU’s finest villains. Then, in Far From Home, Jake Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of Mysterio really upped the ante. But it was No Way Home that truly blew our minds by bringing together Tom Holland’s Spider-Man with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s versions of the character, along with their iconic villains. The third installment in this trilogy managed to jump the shark and stick the landing beautifully. Now, Spider-Man 4 faces a daunting challenge – one that rumors suggest it initially struggled to meet even once.
Based on a post from industry insider Daniel Richtman (DanielRPK), it was previously planned for Spider-Man 4 to expand the roles of two lesser-known villains from Peter Parker’s past, Scorpion and Shocker. Although Marvel Comics enthusiasts may be intrigued by these characters potentially serving as the main antagonists, casual MCU viewers might not recall them.
“The original version before they scrapped it had Scorpion and Shocker.”
I was quite surprised to see both Shocker and Scorpion in Tom Holland’s debut solo outing as Spider-Man, titled Spider-Man: Homecoming. Interestingly, Shocker turned out to be the secret identity of Vulture’s right-hand-man, a character portrayed by Bokeem Woodbine, who was known only as Herman Schultz within the film.
In the movie’s end credits, Scorpion, portrayed by Michael Mando, hinted at the upcoming appearance of the Sinister Six. However, Richtman’s revelation remains unconfirmed by Marvel Studios. He also did not disclose which antagonist will take over as the main villain(s) in Spider-Man 4.
‘Spider-Man 4’ is Being Overrun By Rumors
Whenever a fresh movie is announced, “insiders” and “news leakers” generate numerous speculations and updates, hoping to be correct about one of them. For significant superhero films, this multiplies greatly. Just as James Gunn’s Superman, along with almost every MCU film up to now, have been surrounded by casting, delay, and early-reaction rumors, the unofficial script for Spider-Man 4 is being rewritten constantly by these “scoopers”, who are releasing one “explosive” revelation after another (note the irony).
It’s also been rumored about Spider-Man 4 that Richtman is involved with, and according to a source, actress Anya Taylor-Joy might be considered for a part in this upcoming film. Previously, there were whispers that she was being looked at for the role of Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: First Steps, but that position ended up going to Julia Garner instead.
Some whispers hint that Spider-Man 4 might carry on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s exploration of multiple realities. However, fans have grown a bit tired of the multiverse narratives without consequences in recent Marvel films, yearning for Spider-Man to get back to his familiar neighborhood. Yet, fresh news indicates that this may not be the case.
Spider-Man 4 is currently slated to be released on July 24, 2026.
