In simple terms, the fourth part of the hit Chinese comedy series “Detective Chinatown” action franchise is set to release simultaneously in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia on the same day as it does in China, which is January 29. This date also marks the first day of the Lunar New Year holiday in China, a time considered lucrative for box office earnings.
The first three movies of this series, released between 2015 and 2021 under the direction of Chen Sicheng, together grossed more than $1.3 billion at the box office, with a significant portion of that revenue generated from the Chinese domestic market.
In the upcoming movie titled “Detective Chinatown 1900“, the directors are Chen and Dai Mo. The popular stars from “Detective Chinatown“, Wang Baoqiang and Liu Haoran, are reprising their roles, alongside new addition to the franchise, Chow Yun Fat. This film serves as a prequel, transporting viewers back to early 20th century San Francisco. The supporting cast features John Cusack from Hollywood, along with Yue Yunpeng (from “Full River Red” ), Steven Zhang (from “Endless Journey“) and Bai Ke (from “Johnny Keep Walking!“).
The movie’s plot revolves around the enigmatic murder of a Caucasian woman in San Francisco’s Chinatown district. When a Chinese resident is wrongly accused, local inhabitants grow furious and call for the closure of Chinatown entirely. Qin Fu (played by Liu) and Ah Gui (Wang) find themselves embroiled in the case, working against time to identify the killer amidst a struggle of intellect and bravery.
Just like its predecessors in the series, “Detective Chinatown 1900” was manufactured by Wanda Film, a company based in Beijing. It’s rumored that they constructed a massive 30-acre filming location in Shandong province, China, to build extensive sets mimicking the old-fashioned Chinatown of San Francisco.
In North America, Australia, and New Zealand, the film is being distributed by CMC Pictures. On the other hand, Trinity CineAsia manages distribution in the UK, Ireland, Spain, Germany, and France. The territories of Singapore and Malaysia will see day-and-date releases with MM2 Entertainment handling distribution.
The movie is set to debut in Hong Kong and Macau on February 13 through Intercontinental Film, followed by Cambodia on February 26. Release dates for Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines have not been announced as of now (by MM2 Entertainment).
In Beijing, Blossoms Entertainment is responsible for overseeing global sales and coordinating international distribution of the movie.
