In 1995, prior to the release of some of his most popular romantic comedies such as “Notting Hill,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” and “Love Actually,” Hugh Grant starred in a film titled “Nine Months” alongside Julianne Moore. This movie was directed by Chris Columbus, known for classic films like “The Goonies” and “Home Alone.” The plot revolves around a long-term couple navigating an unplanned pregnancy. Recently, when the topic of “Nine Months” came up in conversation, Grant shared his thoughts:
To clarify, everyone associated with that movie, apart from myself, demonstrated exceptional skill and talent. It was only my performance that fell short. Unfortunately, despite my wife’s interest, I’ve refused to let her watch it. I’ve even set up parental controls on our TV to prevent access.
In an interview with Variety, Grant admitted that he found the romantic comedy enjoyable due to everyone’s performance except his own. At the time of filming, Grant was 34 and it was his debut as a leading actor in a Hollywood film. Given his lack of experience back then, he may not have been as certain about his acting abilities as he is now. Jokingly, he proposed setting parental controls on their home TV to prevent his wife, Anna Eberstein, from watching the movie.

I must admit that “Nine Months” isn’t my favorite Hugh Grant film. Critics gave it a 27% rating and audiences a 37%, with some describing Grant’s performance as a test of endurance and the movie itself as forgettable. Yet, there are many who seem to adore this film, labeling it cute, romantic, and even claiming it among their favorites.
Though Hugh Grant’s wife might miss out on seeing it, it seems like he’s being overly critical about the film. It may not be his favorite movie, but that’s alright – every actor has a less successful project here and there.
