A British supernatural thriller series that has sparked much debate is gaining popularity on various platforms as of late. Launched in 2023, the second season was released on a streaming platform only recently. Titled ““, this series focuses on an oil rig crew who discover themselves enveloped by a puzzling fog and otherworldly supernatural entities. The show has climbed its way to #4 on Amazon Prime Video‘s top 10 list, suggesting that viewers are captivated by the program, reminiscent of John Carpenter’s 1982 classic, The Thing.
Although The Rig is currently quite popular with streaming viewers, it has sparked significant disagreement among critics and spectators. This series features Iain Glen from Game of Thrones along with Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek) and Martin Compston (Line of Duty). In its first season, the show received a moderate 67% approval rating from critics. While some found it disappointing due to excessive stereotypes, others appreciated its atmospheric setting and strong performances, deeming it an enjoyable binge-worthy watch.
Viewers had quite a few issues with “The Rig,” as it was panned with a dismal score of 44% on the Popcornmeter. Regrettably, the second season received even less favorable feedback from audiences. Currently, “The Rig” Season 2 has a score of only 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. Boomer B wrote that the actors seem to have attended the “Days of Our Lives” school of acting, giving it a B grade at best, and compared the sets to “Star Trek” sets from the 60’s. Moreover, he pointed out plot holes big enough for a truck to drive through. Ty J, on the other hand, expressed his disappointment by stating that while he enjoyed season 1, season 2 is nothing but trash. He found the storyline to be predictable and the acting hammy and unconvincing. In short, a promising concept was unfortunately ruined in season 2.
Will ‘The Rig’ Return for Season 3?
In terms of Season 2, there seems to be a general consensus between critics and viewers. Brittany Frederick from CBR gave the series a score of 5 out of 10, stating that it fails to break free from the sensation that the story has been prolonged. She remarks that it’s essentially the same concept with the same overt messaging, only set in a new location. On the other hand, Jonathon Wilson from Ready Steady Cut found the comeback to be an enhancement over the initial release, claiming that Season 2 of The Rig on Prime Video is not only larger and more daring but also slightly superior.
It remains to be seen if “The Rig” will receive a third season. Actors Rochenda Sandall and Iain Glen express their strong desire for a return, with Sandall stating to the Irish Mirror, “We’d always like to come back!” Glen quickly agreed, saying, “We would love to come back. In truth, we really enjoy working on it. We believe there’s more story to tell, and if the audience loves it as much as they did in the first season, I think we’ll be back for a third.” The popularity of “The Rig” on Prime Video may boost the chances of a third season.
