The Big Lebowski stands out as one of the most eccentric yet outstanding movies from the ’90s. This is largely due to its star-studded cast and bizarre incidents, including the iconic dream sequence. Interestingly, Julianne Moore, who portrayed Maude Lebowski in that scene, recently disclosed that she was pregnant with her first child during filming. This revelation adds an extra layer of wildness to the movie and that specific moment.
Moore recently appeared on “The Drew Barrymore Show” to discuss her latest movie with Tilda Swinton, titled “The Room Next Door“. During the interview, the star of “May December” also reminisced about her time in “The Big Lebowski” cast. Interestingly enough, she was pregnant with her first child during filming, but that didn’t deter her from donning the eccentric viking dress and enacting the lively dream sequence, as she recounted through Entertainment Weekly.
Let me share with you a personal experience: When I was expecting my son for the first time, I felt incredibly ill that day. The nausea was so intense, I could hardly manage to move. This particular dress I wore was made of Styrofoam and it just didn’t feel right on me, making me groan every time I moved. To put it mildly, I was in a state of misery, and I couldn’t reveal my pregnancy to anyone because I wanted to keep it private. Needless to say, that outfit turned out to be the last thing I wanted to wear while pregnant and nauseous – simply dreadful!
If you’re trying to recall the distinctive appearance of Moore as Maude Lebowski, she donned a gold dress resembling armor that fell to mid-thigh, a bra designed like a coconut bra with a bowling ball inside, and a horned hat, not forgetting her trident-like staff. It’s surprising to learn that the iconic dress from the Lebowski scene was actually made of styrofoam and she was pregnant at the time, as it adds another layer of absurdity to the scene.
Oh, such a remarkable woman! The very idea of accomplishing what she did, all while pregnant, leaves me feeling queasy – yet she executed it with an ease that’s almost unbelievable.
In this scene, the story unfolds as if it were an extravagant dream for The Dude (played by Jeff Bridges). It resembles an old-fashioned Hollywood spectacle, filled with ornate dancers and a magnificent staircase. Amidst this crowd, Maude Lebowski makes her appearance. They share a brief moment together before they find themselves bowling. As the dream nears its end, The Dude transforms into the bowling ball and glides down the alley under a series of female legs. It’s worth noting that Jeff Bridges was taken aback when he realized what lay beneath those skirts. In summary, this sequence is one wild, unforgettable adventure.
The main point is that Julianne Moore deserves much praise for her performance, managing to stay composed amidst the surreal styrofoam setting, all while keeping her pregnancy a secret. Although it leaves me longing for a bowling night or to reorganize my movie queue, Donny’s tragic ending in the film remains an emotionally moving death that I will never forget. So, perhaps I’ll just focus on re-watching this surreal dreamscape and admiring the actress’s dedication to her craft.
To immerse yourself in the bowling adventure from “The Big Lebowski”, it’s essential to have a premium Hulu membership or a Starz subscription.
