Streaming Ratings: ‘Red One’ Tops ‘Carry-On’ in Holiday Action Movie Matchup

Both “Red One” on Prime Video and “Carry-On” on Netflix saw impressive debuts in the world of streaming, with “Red One” taking the lead in viewership according to Nielsen’s rankings.

The Christmas-centric action comedy titled “Red One,” boasted by Amazon as its largest global debut yet, amassed a staggering 2.1 billion minutes of viewing in the U.S. during the week of December 9th to 15th. (Featuring Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson in lead roles, the film also had a brief stint in cinemas, grossing approximately $186 million worldwide at the box office.)

The Christmas-themed action comedy “Red One,” Amazon’s biggest global premiere to date, accumulated 2.1 billion minutes of viewing in the U.S. from December 9th to 15th. (Starring Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson, it also had a limited cinema release and earned about $186 million at the international box office.)

Meanwhile, Netflix’s “Carry-On” clocked an impressive 1.69 billion minutes viewed for the truncated week, even though it had one less day: It debuted on December 13, while “Red One” started streaming on December 12 via Amazon Prime Video. The suspenseful movie featuring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman is currently among Netflix’s top five English-language films so far (based on the first 91 days of its release).

Additionally, Netflix saw a significant debut for the contentious film adaptation of It Ends With Us, Colleen Hoover’s popular novel. The movie racked up 977 million minutes of viewing time during that week, placing it fourth in Nielsen’s weekly rankings.

Over the week of Dec 9-15, I found myself immersed in more viewing minutes of Black Doves, making it the top pick on the series charts with a whopping 1 billion plus minutes watched, marking an impressive 11% increase from its previous week’s 899 million. Previously leading the pack for two consecutive weeks, The Madness slipped to fourth position among original series, trailing behind Netflix’s dark comedy No Good Deed(883 million) and Paramount+’s Taylor Sheridan drama Landman(826 million). The latter has been consistently delivering strong performances. Additionally, Jamie Foxx’s Netflix special What Had Happened Was… garnered a significant 413 million minutes of my attention during the same period.

Nielsen’s streaming rankings account for viewing exclusively on TV screens and exclude minutes spent watching on computers or mobile devices. Moreover, these ratings solely assess American viewers, excluding those from other countries. Here are the top streaming choices from December 9-15, 2024:
