’28 Years Later’ Producer Says Cillian Murphy is Not in Sequel

If you were eagerly anticipating Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Jim in the upcoming third film of the 28 Days Later franchise, titled 28 Years Later (which is the start of a planned trilogy), you might need to adjust your expectations. According to the movie’s producer, Andrew Macdonald, there’s been a change in plans and Murphy will not be featuring in the film. Therefore, any fans hoping for updates on Jim’s whereabouts since the first movie may have to wait longer for answers.

In a conversation, Macdonald – known for collaborating with Danny Boyle and Alex Garland on movies like “28 Days Later” and its sequel “28 Weeks Later”, among others – clarified that Murphy will serve as an executive producer for the potential project titled “28 Years Later”.

According to Macdonald, both parties were eager to participate. However, he wasn’t included in the initial movie, but Macdonald expresses optimism that there might be a role for Jim in future installments.

As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that the current installment leaves us hanging on whether Murphy will grace our screens again in the upcoming sequels. But if reports are to be believed and Nia DaCosta’s “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” is already wrapped up, then we might have to wait for the third movie in this trilogy to unravel the fate of Jim.

Initially, viewers believed they saw Jim among the undead in the trailer for “28 Years Later.” However, upon closer inspection, it was revealed that this emaciated zombie character was portrayed by Angus Neill, not the character played by Jim. Contrary to speculation, the character infected with the virus is not Jim.

’28 Years Later’ Is an Enigma Right Now

At present, relatively little information is available regarding the movie titled “28 Years Later“. Notably, Aaron-Taylor Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes are among its stars. Intriguingly, Fiennes offered some intriguing insights into the film’s plot during an interview with IndieWire.

In the midst of a 28-year-long devastating pandemic involving violent, rabid humans infecting others, Britain’s story revolves around a young boy on a quest to find a physician to save his ailing mother. Their journey takes them through picturesque northern English landscapes, but they must be cautious as the infected lurk in forests, hills, and woods. Remarkably, he encounters a doctor who may seem peculiar or strange at first, but ultimately proves to be a benevolent figure.

As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been eagerly anticipating “28 Years Later,” the highly-awaited sequel to a classic film. In a recent interview, the captivating Gillian Anderson, who starred in “Killing Eve,” shared some intriguing insights about the upcoming movie. Unlike spilling the beans on the plot details, she hinted that the film will share thematic similarities with its predecessor, delving deeper into human behavior rather than relying on shock value or excessive gore.

28 Years Henceforth is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on June 20, 2025. Its follow-up, titled 28 Years Henceforth: The Bone Temple, is due for release on January 16, 2026. At present, there’s no confirmed date for the third movie.
