The Superman Trailer Raised An Interesting Question That I Think Was Answered By The Creature Commandos Finale

In a swift span, James Gunn and Peter Safran have successfully set into motion their DC Universe (DCU). Remarkably, storylines that are unfolding stem from Gunn’s previous works such as The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, with the latter returning for Season 2. However, the official commencement was in 2024, marked by the release of the animated series Creature Commandos, accessible via Max subscription. This summer, Gunn’s DC film, Superman, is set to premiere in cinemas. Although each story seems self-contained and doesn’t require viewing all others for comprehension, there are hints that these narratives may be interconnected. One such possible connection has emerged in the series, Creature Commandos.

Throughout most of its run, the TV series Creature Commandos centered around an assassination plot against Princess Ilana Rostovic (Maria Bakalova), successor to the throne of the fictional nation Pokolistan. At first, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assembles a team to thwart the sorceress Circe (Anya Chalotra) and safeguard the Princess. In the season finale, it is revealed that Princess Rostovic was the real danger all along; she had been manipulating events to execute a plan that would have seen Pokolistan overpowering the heroes of the DCU and taking control of the planet.

In a different phrasing: The Bride disables Ilana Rostovic by firing a bullet into her head. However, this does not halt Pokolistan’s scheme of global conquest, as they still possess an army of robotic guards at their disposal. On the contrary, The Bride’s actions might have inadvertently caused instability within this fictional nation, potentially escalating conflicts in the surrounding regions.

The subject at hand leads me to discuss the initial trailer for James Gunn’s forthcoming DC film featuring Superman. Upon viewing this sneak peek, I find myself questioning the overall mood, particularly regarding how society responds to Superman. There are undeniably moments where civilians express anger towards Kal-El (David Corenswet), but we remain unaware of the reasons behind their discontent. Moreover, in leaked photos from set, it is apparent that one prominent character from the Creature Commandos, Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), apprehends Superman and presumably delivers him before a higher power to respond for certain actions.

Could that be Amanda Waller, for whom we know Flag is working?

In this scenario, Waller might find Superman’s actions annoying as the following events unfold: During the Superman trailer, a boy in distress appeals to Superman, displaying a homemade flag with the Superman insignia. Despite the chaos and war around him, the Man of Steel responds, indicating his compassion and heroism. Meanwhile, intelligence on a monitor shows that the troops from the fictional country Boravia are gathering at their border due to an unknown conflict. This could potentially disrupt Waller’s plans or cause complications in her strategies, as she might prefer to keep such situations under control without Superman’s intervention.

Does Boravia border Pokolistan?

After the assassination of The Princess in Pokolistan by The Bride, did things take a turn for the worse? Was there a struggle for power that spilled over into Boravia? It’s not hard to imagine Superman being drawn into such a large-scale conflict, with Waller dispatching her enforcer, Rick Flag Sr., to capture the alien. For fans of Creature Commandos, it would be an exciting Easter egg for Gunn to carry on the storyline from that series, and have The Bride’s actions cause repercussions that Superman must address. However, for newcomers to Superman, it can simply be marketed as a conflict between feuding fictional nations, with Superman choosing to intervene.

Easy enough to swallow. And both audiences are satisfied.

In simpler terms, James Gunn has mentioned that it’s not necessary for people buying a ticket for Superman to have watched Creature Commandos beforehand. These stories are self-contained but occur in the same universe. However, since Gunn is skilled at creating connections between these worlds, it seems likely that questions about Boravia and the military conflict involving an innocent boy might be addressed by the death of Ilana Rostovic, the leader of Pokolistan, and all these DC events may indeed be interconnected in some way.

We will find out for sure when Superman soars into theaters on July 11.
