Warwick Davis, ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Star Wars’ Actor, Set to Receive BAFTA’s Highest Honor

This year’s British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) will bestow the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship upon Warwick Davis, a renowned actor who has captivated audiences in films such as “Harry Potter” and “Star Wars”.

The BAFTA Fellowship is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional and remarkable achievements in film, video games, or television. It is the highest accolade bestowed by the arts charity. He will receive the award during the EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony on February 16 this year.

Or, in a more casual tone:

The BAFTA Fellowship celebrates people who have made a truly amazing and unique impact on film, games, or TV. It’s the arts charity’s top prize. He’ll be getting it at this year’s EE BAFTA Film Awards on February 16.

Originating from Surrey, England, Davis is renowned for his iconic roles in some of the world’s longest-running and critically acclaimed film series. These include Professor Filius Flitwick in the Harry Potter films and Wicket the Ewok, personally chosen by George Lucas, in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983). His presence continued in the franchise, peaking with his appearance in The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

At birth, Davis was diagnosed with a rare type of dwarfism called congenital spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia. Despite this, Davis is being recognized by BAFTA for his significant contributions to the film industry, particularly in promoting inclusivity. He established Willow Management, an agency that specializes in representing actors who are either under five feet or over seven feet tall. This unique agency is the largest of its kind globally.

I, being an avid gamer, am not just a partaker in digital worlds, but also a pioneer in the real one. I’m one of the founders of Little People U.K., a charitable organization that provides companionship, financial aid, and advice to individuals with dwarfism, as well as their loved ones. Additionally, my Reduced Height Theatre Company champions actors who stand under five feet tall.

Beyond his roles in his own franchises, Davis has also shone in the 1988 fantasy adventure film “Willow,” directed by Ron Howard, as well as the British TV series “Life’s Too Short” (2011-2013), which he starred in alongside Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

Davis expressed his thoughts on the news as follows: “To me, The Fellowship symbolizes the essence of BAFTA’s values – inclusivity, creativity, and teamwork. This honor isn’t solely about my body of work, but it also acknowledges the support I’ve received from the people around me and the audiences who have made this journey meaningful.

I gratefully receive this Fellowship, acknowledging all those who live with dwarfism or any unique characteristics, demonstrating that our distinctiveness can be our most powerful strength. I also wish to express gratitude towards the dedicated professionals behind the scenes – costume designers, makeup artists, camera crews – who work diligently and passionately on each project. From deep within me, thank you for this remarkable recognition. I am excited to carry on promoting innovative viewpoints, advocating for improved representation, and encouraging future storytellers to aim high. Thank you, BAFTA, for recognizing my journey.

BAFTA Chair Sara Putt expressed great joy as she announced that Warwick Davis would receive the BAFTA Fellowship, our most prestigious award. ‘Warwick is a gifted individual who has touched hearts for many years with his talent and inspiring nature,’ said Putt. Highly esteemed by colleagues in the UK and worldwide for his remarkable creativity and dedication to the art of storytelling, we at BAFTA are excited to honor Warwick’s exceptional career and accomplishments during the EE BAFTA Film Awards next month.
