Studio Where Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat Recorded Albums Burned Down in Palisades Wildfire

The studio in Malibu, where Nicki Minaj and Doja Cat recently produced their newest albums, has been devastated by the fierce wildfires currently sweeping across Los Angeles.

Zach Brandon, the founder of Harbor Studios, shared some unfortunate news via an Instagram post on Friday. He wrote: “With a heavy heart, I must inform you that Harbor Studios has been destroyed by the Palisades Fire. Since the 1990s, Harbor has been a vital part of the music community – initially serving as the recording studio for Joe Zawinul and his renowned Jazz Fusion group, ‘The Weather Report’. Later, in 2008, it became the primary studio for respected film composer Paul Dinletir, where he crafted compositions for blockbusters such as Avatar, Avengers, and other films that broke box office records.

Eventually, by the year 2021, it transformed into Harbor Studios – named after a cherished memory from my past. Starting as a grand, dream-like notion, Harbor Studios soon became a well-loved fixture in the music recording industry.

In December of 2023, Minaj completed the recording of “Pink Friday 2” at the studio, which included the No. 1 single, “Super Freaky Girl.” Simultaneously in September 2023, Doja Cat’s album “Scarlet” was also produced at the same studio, boasting hits like “Agora Hills” and “Paint the Town Red,” a track that received a Grammy nomination the previous year.

This morning, I shed tears, not due to Harbor being destroyed, but because the realization sank in that Harbor was taken away from numerous artists who cherished it deeply. It was more than just a place; it symbolized musical liberation… a true sanctuary. I adored it, Brandon shared.

Harbor isn’t finished; we’re starting anew again… it’s familiar territory for us. Moreover, I’ve learned a great deal from Harbor 1 that I’ll be incorporating into the redesign. I’ve already initiated the process – my original studio partner and I have been brainstorming about what the new Harbor Studios will become. Fortunately, the special connection we share with our clients is something timeless; it permeates our workspace, our atmosphere, and our hearts. We’ll emerge stronger from this experience.
