  • A Life and Death Decision and a Moment’s Hesitation in ‘The Rookie’

In the seventh season of “The Rookie”, which airs on ABC, we find the police station embroiled in corruption and following the climactic finale of Season 6 that ended with a gunfight. The current situation demands tough choices and repercussions. Fresh recruits are facing immense pressure as a looming nuclear threat threatens to disrupt the status quo. Moreover, John’s actions after being shot could potentially be lethal.

In the opening episode of Season 7 of The Rookie, John (Nathan Fillion) reassures everyone that he’s fine after being shot while apprehending Monica Stevens. Despite minimal physical harm, it soon becomes evident that John is grappling with some residual problems. A fresh batch of rookies, however, seem to create more trouble than help. With high hopes pinned on their success, will Boot and Peacock measure up to the challenge?

A Life and Death Decision and a Moment’s Hesitation in ‘The Rookie’

The main concern at the station is locating and re-apprehending the fugitives Jason Wyler and Oscar Hutchinson. It appears that Wyler, who was previously married to Nolan’s new spouse, has traveled to L.A. following news of Bailey’s remarriage. Both the FBI and U.S. Marshals are involved in the manhunt. During their routine patrol, John and Celina stumble upon a robbery at a drugstore.

In a tense moment as he tries to act, John pauses before firing at the robber. He briefly rests his finger on and then removes it from the trigger, taking a deep breath. This hesitation is unusual for him, as he had previously shown no fear and even initiated a gunfight in the last episode, resulting in him getting wounded. Therefore, such a pause seems out of character for John.

Later on, John confides in Lieutenant Grey that he wasn’t absolutely sure about taking the shot cleanly. However, his uncertainty gave the attacker a chance to flee through the back door, where he fatally shoots a man and takes off with his car. In a distressing sequence of events, they choose not to inform the man’s family of his death until after they get a statement from his wife. Although their rationale seems sensible given her potential emotional instability, it appears harsh. Inside the vehicle, Juarez tries to console him and inquires about what he would say to her if the roles were reversed. John responds that the best course of action is to learn from the event so that future encounters can lead to victory instead of loss.

The New Recruits in ‘The Rookie’ Season 7 and a Nuclear Decision

Two fresh recruits, Boots and Peacock (as nicknamed by Bradford), have joined the station. The newcomer Boots, or Seth Ridley as known within the team, is full of eagerness but struggles with his nerves, while Peacock, aka Miles Penn, is a transfer who boasts arrogance and showmanship. Chin and Bradford make a wager on which trainee will excel most within a month. Despite Chin’s disappointment with Boots’ lack of experience, Bradford frequently becomes exasperated by Peacock’s reckless disregard for protocol. During their first mission, Penn manages to accumulate three warnings while pursuing a car chase suspect. He further complicates the situation by defying Bradford’s instruction to retreat when they discover that the vehicle is radioactive.

The radioactive vehicle’s presence can be traced back to a hidden nuclear bomb that was illegally transported from the harbor. Although the thief who took it from the port is deceased, one of his accomplices has been apprehended and is being persuaded to cooperate in order to identify others involved. ADA Evans, who recently took charge of the department due to psychiatrist London’s connection with corrupt lawyer Stevens, momentarily pauses her examination of London’s recordings to negotiate a settlement.

In a turn of events, the thief surrenders his accomplices and the whereabouts of the device. As law enforcement teams rush to halt the nuclear threat, an uneven gunfight breaks out, with the police playing ‘Don’t Shoot the Bomb!’ as they take cover. Finding no response from the police, one of the thieves warns he will detonate the bomb unless they are freed.

Amidst the turmoil, it was John who stepped up and made the crucial shot, apprehending the thief and ensuring victory. At the finale of the series, Bradford and Chin deemed their rookies’ first day unproductive due to Penn’s excessive enthusiasm and Ridley’s mishap, where he tainted a crime scene by vomiting. Both newcomers had bumpy beginnings during the episode. Nevertheless, they ended up winning the hearts of the audience with their adorable contributions to the police drama.

In the first episode of Season 7 of The Rookie, John was grappling with some leftover troubles following his shooting at the end of the previous season. Although his physical injuries seemed to be healed, his reluctance to get involved suggested a stark contrast from his enthusiasm at the end of last season. But as John learned from his hesitation, when another opportunity for action arose, he had resolved his issues and was able to take decisive action when needed. The Rookie can be streamed on Hulu and airs every Tuesday on ABC.
