It appears James Gunn isn’t rushing to incorporate the character into his DCU plans, possibly because the character isn’t well-liked and not particularly popular. This is speculation based on recent comments by an unnamed source, who suggested this could be one reason for the poor performance of the 2023 DCEU movie featuring that character at the box office. It’s worth noting that Gunn is aware of the existence of the Arrowverse, correct?
Following the director’s comments, fans have been inquisitive about his assertion, and he has faced some online mockery for seemingly dismissing a character that spanned nine seasons and multiple crossover events within The CW’s superhero universe. However, is it accurate to say that The Flash doesn’t appeal to all four demographic quadrants as the director suggests?
During a radio interview on Radio Tu, director Muschietti indicated some potential issues with the film, such as the personal scandals surrounding actor Ezra Miller, the backlash over subpar CGI depictions of previous DC characters like Christopher Reeve, and the general struggles of the DCEU following Warner Bros.’ announcement that it was no more. However, he primarily attributed the problems to the character itself rather than external factors. He stated:
“In the interview, Muschietti predominantly pointed the finger at the character for the issues faced by the movie.
The Flash didn’t succeed for various reasons, one major factor being its lack of universal appeal across all four audience demographics. It failed to achieve this, which was a significant setback considering the substantial $200 million investment. In essence, Warner Bros. aimed to attract not just the average moviegoer but even their grandmothers to the cinema for this film. From my discussions, it appears that many people aren’t particularly interested in the Flash character, and this seems to be especially true among female audiences. Unfortunately, these factors combined have worked against the movie, as I’ve observed.
Andy Muschietti’s Flash Comments Contrast with James Gunn’s Comic Book Success
Each person has their preferred superheroes, while there are some characters they could comfortably do without. When discussing the Flash versus Batman and Superman, or any DC character in comparison to these two iconic figures, it’s essential to acknowledge that the allure of Batman and Superman is seldom surpassed by other DC heroes, given the profound impact these characters have left on the comic book world.
In addition to the popular success of “The Flash” series on TV, with Grant Gustin delivering a beloved portrayal of Barry Allen, James Gunn has built a career around characters who may not be as famous as Batman or Superman but have still managed to make their mark. For instance, the Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise was one of the most consistent trilogies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and introduced characters that were completely unknown to casual comic book enthusiasts before Gunn’s 2014 film.
In a similar vein, both Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” and the DCU debut project, “Creature Commandos,” were successful despite featuring primarily lesser-known DC characters, such as Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. However, Muschietti’s involvement in the first Batman project for the DCU, “The Brave and the Bold,” has not been met with favor among online fans due to his recent comments. Time will tell how Muschietti’s future in the DCU unfolds in the coming years.
